PANAMA’ WINS SERIE DEL CARIBE 2019!!

Final Report – February 15, 2019

Panama’ 3 – Cuba 1

In an emotional final game on Sunday Feb. 10, before 18,000 (est.) fans in Estadio Rod Carew, the host team won its first Serie del Caribe since 1950.  Panama’ broke out on top 2-0 in the bottom of the first and never gave up the lead.

Panama 3B-SS Javy Guerra was named the Series MVP.

REFLECTIONS ON SERIE DEL CARIBE 2019

Considering the short amount of time (less than two weeks) that the hosts had to prepare for Serie del Caribe, I think everything went off smoothly.  Estadio Rod Carew is a great venue to watch baseball.  The field itself was in great shape and it was a pleasant experience in the stadium.  Sight lines were good.  There was enough food, drink and sportswear, although I’m sure there would have been more selection given more time to plan for the event.

The weather was great for baseball!  Temperatures ranged from 75F at night to 90F during the day.  With a pleasant prevailing breeze, watching the games at the stadium was very enjoyable.

Panama City is a modern, cosmopolitan city.  Banking is a huge industry and there were many large, new banks.  Lots of major construction projects in the city and I read of many investment projects being initiated across the country.

The six-team system of competition worked well – every game was important and there were meaningful games on the last day of group play as well as a great final game.  Two highly competitive teams made the finals and the Panama squad ended with a record of 4-1 and were deserving of the championship.  Most fans that I spoke with were in favor of keeping the six-team, two-group play, format of competition in the future.

Thelma Acosta (to left of flag) and her team from the Travesias Mundiales travel agency in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico did a great job on short notice in switching our group’s travel plans from Venezuela to Panama.  Arrangements and reservations went smoothly in Panama City.

Finally, thanks to mi buen amigo Juan Antonio Jasso (in picture with the author above) for his help and friendship.  Thanks also to my friends ‘Nacho Romero and Juan Antonio Diaz.  These three gentlemen add tremendously to my enjoyment of Serie del Caribe and travel to Latin America.

Current plans are for Serie del Caribe to be held in San Juan, Puerto Rico in 2020 and in Mazatlán, Mexico in 2021.

CUBA AND PANAMA’ WILL FACE OFF IN THE FINALS !!

Both games on Saturday were extremely important for the outcome of Serie del Caribe 2019.

Game 11 – Cuba defeated Venezuela 3-0 to win Group A.  Cuban starter Lazaro Blanco pitched five innings, working around five hits and three walks to record the win.  The bullpen did the rest, shutting out Cardenales de Lara on only three more hits in the remaining four innings.

Game 12 – Panama’ takes Group B with a 1-0 victory over Puerto Rico.  The hosts scored an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth and that stood up for the win.  Four Panama’ pitchers combined for the shutout, with starter Oriel Caicedo getting the win and Manny Corpus recording the save.

Both group winners were decided by tie-breaker rules.  Cuba prevailed in Group A with a superior Team Quality Balance – TQB – essentially run differential but with consideration for innings actually played on offense and defense.  In Group B, Panama’ and Venezuela were both tied at 3-1, were tied on TQB, and were tied on TQB considering only earned runs.  The third tie-breaker consideration awarded 1st place in the Group to the hosts.

February 8, 2019

Game 9 – The Dominican team defeated host Panama’ 5-3.  Catcher Wilkin Castillo was the hitting star, going 3-for-4 with four RBI.  Jumbo Diaz again got the save.

Game 10 – Mexico scored early and often, handing the Venezuela team their first loss 9-4.  1B Victor Mendoza was 4-for-5 and broke the game open with a 3-run homer in the bottom of the sixth.

Through five days of group play, the standings are —

Group A – Venezuela 2-1, Mexico 2-2, Cuba 1-2

Group B – Dominicana 3-1, Panama’ 2-1, Puerto Rico 0-3

On Saturday, Venezuela plays Cuba and Panama’ plays Puerto Rico.  These games are both very important and will directly affect which teams win the groups and advance to the finals.  Should the W-L be tied, a form of run differential will be used to break the tie.  Stay tuned …

February 7, 2019

Game 7 – Mexico gets into the win column with 3-2, 11-inning victory over Cuba.  Most of the scoring took place in the first inning, as the Mexican team posted a single run as they led off and Cuba answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame.  But that was all Cuba could manage as the Mexican pitching staff shut them out for the remaining 10 innings.  Mexico tied the game in the top of the sixth and pushed the winner across in the top of the eleventh.

CF Alonzo Harris was 3-4 with a walk and scored twice as he led off for Mexico.  The Cuban runs were driven in by long-time stars Alfredo Despaigne and Freddy Cepeda.  Mexico closer Sergio Romo came on in relief in the ninth, pitched 2 2/3 innings, struck out three and picked up the win.

Game 8 – The Dominican team won in walk-off fashion 5-4 over Puerto Rico.  The defending champs pounded out 12 hits to take a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the 8th, but the Puerto Rican bullpen issued walks leading to single Dominican tallies in the bottom of the 8th and 9th.   Junior Lake drove in the winning run.

Through four days of group play, the standings are now:

Group A – Venezuela 2-0; Cuba 1-2; Mexico 1-2

Group B – Panama’ 2-0;  Dominicana 2-1; Puerto Rico 0-3

February 6, 2019

Game 5 – Venezuela prevailed 1-0 over Cuba in a tight pitching duel.  The only tally was scored in the bottom of the seventh when 1B Rangel Ravelo reached on an error, advanced to second with a walk to the next batter, was sacrificed to third, and then scored on a sac fly.  One unearned run manufactured without a hit!

Game 6 was a wild affair, with the host Panama team coming from behind to defeat defending champs Puerto Rico 8 – 7.  Panama slugged out 14 hits but hurt themselves by walking 7 and committing two errors.  As a result, Puerto Rico led 6-1 at the end of seven innings.  Then the real fun began as the hosts put up 4 in the 8th and 3 in the 9th.  SS Javy Guerra again starred for Panama, going 3 for 4 with a key two out, two RBI double in the 8th.

At the end of the first round of group play, the standings look like this

No team is statistically eliminated, yet, but the Mexican and Puerto Rican clubs would need to win their remaining two games, with a big run differential, and hope for help from Cuba and Dominicana respectively.  The second round of group play begins Thursday Feb. 7.

February 5, 2019

Game 3 saw the Mexican squad continue to struggle offensively as Cuba won 3 to 1.  Cuban starter Lazaro Blanco pitched seven shutout innings for the win.  Long time Cuban star Alfredo Despaigne was 3 for 4 and drove in all three Cuba runs.

With the new Cuba/MLB agreement, scouts were in attendance to get a first hand look at the Cuban players.

Game 4 was an exciting affair with the Panama squad defeating the Dominicans 4 to 2.  This game marked the first time since 1960 that Panama has fielded a team at Serie del Caribe.  The results were very positive for the hosts.  SS Javy Guerra, who debuted with the Padres last summer, opened the scoring with a solo homer in the bottom of the second.  Panama starter Harold Arauz pitched five shutout innings.  The Dominicans tied the game in the sixth at 2-2, but Panama came back in the seventh with two runs sparked by aggressive base running.  Manny Corpas closed out the ninth for the win.

February 4, 2019

The 61st edition of the Caribbean Series is underway!

Game 1 saw the Dominican team (Estrellas Orientales) defeat defending champion Puerto Rico 3 to 1.  Dominican starter Nestor Cortes and three relievers held the Santurce squad to only one hit!  Jumbo Diaz picked up the save.  The Dominicans pounded out 12 hits and put up single runs in the 2nd, 5th and 9th innings to pick up the win.

Recent HOF electee Mariano Rivera threw out the ceremonial first pitch in between games.  It seemed fitting that this occurred in Rod Carew Stadium, thus tying together the two Panamanian hall-of-famers.

In Game 2, Venezuela (Cardenales) defeated Mexico (Charros) 5 to 1.  Venezuela was scheduled as the “home” team, and it certainly seemed like a home game for them.  There were thousands of Venezuelan fans in the ballpark supporting their team.   Nestor Molina was the winning pitcher, working five effective innings and allowing only the one unearned run.  Cardenales broke the game open with three tallies in the bottom of the sixth, including a two run homer by 3B Carlos Rivero.

I would estimate attendance at the evening game was around 10,000.

February 3, 2019

Single game tickets went on sale yesterday at local outlets and the stadium ticket office.  The Panamanians are making a big push to turn out a large crowd on short notice.  Tickets are priced to sell … $5 for the upper seats down the foul lines and $20 for good box seats.  These prices are USD (the dollar is legal currency in Panama’) and are good for both games each day.

There was a protest rally here in response to the Venezuelan opposition leader’s call for support.  The U.S. charge’ and Colombian ambassador were both in attendance.

Panama native and recent HOF electee Mariano Rivera will throw out the ceremonial first pitch before the evening game Monday.

The Caribbean Baseball Confederation announced Monday afternoon, January 28, that the tournament will be moved from Barquisimeto, Venezuela to Estadio Nacional de Panama’ in Panama City.  The current Panama’ champs, Toros de Herrera, will join the field of league champions competing at the Series.

Estadio Nacional de Panama’ is also known as Rod Carew Stadium.  It seats 27,000 for baseball.  Dimensions are 321′ at both foul lines and 400′ in center.  The field is natural grass.

As of Thursday, January 31 it appears that the Venezuelan champions, Cardenales de Lara, will indeed participate.  The announced format-of-competition for the resulting six-team tournament is as follows:

The field will be divided into two groups for group play:

Group A – Venezuela (Cardenales de Lara), Mexico (Charros de Jalisco) and Cuba (Lenadores de Las Tunas)

Group B – Panama’ (Toros de Herrera), Dominican Republic (Estrellas Orientales – San Pedro de Macoris), Puerto Rico (Cangrejeros de Santurce)

Schedule – Group play from Feb. 4 to Feb. 9.  Each team will have two games against each of the other two teams in its Group – for a total of four games over the six days.  The two Group winners will then face off in the Final on Feb. 10 for the Serie del Caribe crown.

PLAYOFFS UPDATE – January 27-28, 2019

DOMINICANA

Estrellas Orientales (San Pedro) cruised through the best-of-nine LIDOM final series, defeating Toros (La Romana) five games to one.  Centerfielder Jose Siri (AA with Cincinnati) was the hitting star of the playoffs, batting .591.

This is Estrellas’ first LIDOM championship since 1968, and will be the club’s very first visit to la Serie del Caribe.  Pictures above show the celebration parade in San Pedro in ’68 and last week.  (Photos courtesy of Shawn Flaherty in La Romana)

PUERTO RICO

Cangrejeros de Santurce swept Mayaguez in four games to claim the Puerto Rican league crown.  The largest crowd of the season, over 7500, saw the locals defeat the regular season champion Indios at Estadio Hiram Bithorn in San Juan.  The Crabbers will advance to Serie del Caribe and attempt to win Puerto Rico’s third straight Caribbean corona.

VENEZUELA

Cardenales de Lara won the LVBP championship, four games to one, with a 9-2 victory over Caracas.  This is the Redbirds’ fifth Venezuelan championship.  Shortstop Juniel Querecuto was named finals MVP after hitting .611 in the final series.  Querecuto is an Arizona Diamondbacks farmhand, having hit for a combined .337 at AA and AAA this past summer.

It’s very unfortunate that, due to the political situation in Venezuela, Cardenales will not be hosting Serie del Caribe in their home ball park.  They had an outstanding season, finishing second overall in the regular season and cruising through all three playoff rounds.

MEXICO

Charros de Jalisco defeated Yaquis de Obregon 11-1 in Game 6 to take the LMP championship four games to two.  Charros’ first baseman Dariel Alvarez was named Final Series MVP.  During the six games, the former Orioles farmhand batted .370 with 3 HR and 11 RBI.

CUBA – the Las Tunas roster will be heavily re-inforced at Serie del Caribe.  Fourteen of the 28 players will be refuerzos selected from the other Serie Nacional 58 clubs.

PLAYOFFS UPDATE – January 16 – 20, 2019

One league winner has been determined, with the other four final series are either in-progress or about to begin.  Here’s the latest:

VENEZUELA

Leones de Caracas closed out their semi-final series four games to one against Caribes.  Cardenales de Lara also advanced to the LVBP finals by defeating Magallanes four games to two.

16,874 fanaticos saw their Cardenales clinch the final berth at home in Barquisimeto.  Their ball park is Estadio Antonio Herrera Gutierrez, the host site for next month’s Serie del Caribe 2019.

MEXICO

Charros de Jalisco took their semi-final series from Mazatlan four games to one.  Yaquis de Obregon played at Los Mochis in a decisive game seven of their semi-final series.  Yaquis prevailed 6-2, taking advantage of three Caneros errors to advance to the finals.

The LMP finals will open Monday, January 21 with Charros hosting Yaquis at Estadio de Beisbol Charros de Jalisco in Zapopan (Guadalajara).

Charros’ shortstop Manny Rodriguez was named LMP MVP.  He led the league with 52 RBI, while hitting .313 with 13 HR and 41 runs scored.  This is Rodriguez’ second consecutive MVP honor and third in his career.  He trails only the great Hector Espino, who had six MVP honors.

PUERTO RICO

Eleven games into the semi-final todos-contra-todos series, the two finalists have been determined.  Indios de Mayaguez clinched the first pass to the final series several games ago.  And, with Carolina’s loss Friday night, Santurce also advanced to the final series.

The round-robin standings as of close of play on January 18 are:

The final series will commence Tuesday, January 22 at Estadio Isidoro “Cholo” Garcia in Mayagüez.  This will be the fifth consecutive appearance in the finals for Cangrejeros de Santurce.

CUBA

Las Tunas wins its first-ever Cuban title!  The Lumberjacks took the final series four games to one, clinching the Serie Nacional 58 title and a trip to Serie del Caribe.

The team played well all season, finishing the first-half only one game out of first place, winning the second half by two games, and dominating their semi-final and final series.  Their next game will be Saturday, February 2 in Barquisimeto and will be the opening game of Serie del Caribe 2019.

DOMINICANA – after the 18-game semi-final round-robin, the final field was still not decided:

The second-place tie between Escogido (Santo Domingo) and Toros (La Romana) had to be resolved with a one-game tie breaker played at Estadio Quisqueya Juan Marichal on Wednesday evening January 15.

Toros won that game 4-3 behind eight solid innings by their veteran pitcher Raul Valdes and a 2-RBI triple by DH Jordany Valdespin.

Consequently, the best-of-nine final series will be an “All Eastern” affair matching Estrellas Orientales (San Pedro) and Toros del Este.

The LiDOM finals will begin Thursday January 17, with Estrellas hosting Toros at Estadio Tetelo Vargas in San Pedro de Macoris.

Early results – as of January 19 action in the LIDOM finals, Estrellas lead Toros two games to one.

PLAYOFFS UPDATE – January 11, 2019

CUBA

Serie Nacional 58 is the first league to move on to their final series.  Favorites Las Tunas won their semi-final series easily over Ciego de Avila – four games to one.  Likewise, Villa Clara eliminated Sancti Spiritus four games to one.
The final series will open Saturday, January 12 at Estadio Julio Antonio Mella in Las Tunas.

MEXICO –  the semi-final field is set in la Liga Mexicana del Pacifico.

Los Mochis eliminated Hermosillo four games to two.

Charros de Jalisco defeated Culiacan four games to two.  The deciding game six went to Jalisco, 1-0, even though they tallied only one hit!  But that hit was an RBI double by catcher Gabriel Gutierrez in the top of the ninth to drive in the deciding run.

Mazatlán won the seventh and deciding game of their series with Obregon, 3-2.  Obregon also advances to the semi-finals as the wild card.  In the LMP system of competition, el mejor perdedor (the best loser) advances as the fourth team to the semi-final round.  Yaquis de Obregon won three games in their losing effort, so therefore they qualified for the semi-finals.

The semi-final play begins Friday January 11 with Jalisco at Mazatlan and Obregon at Los Mochis.

Naranjeros shortstop Jasson Atondo was named LMP Rookie of the Year and was the first selection (by Mazatlán) in the draft of refuerzos for the semi-final round.

Jalisco pitcher Elian Leyva was named LMP Pitcher of the Year.

DOMINICANA – the todos-contra-todos semi-final round continues to be a tight three-way race.  Toros won a key game last night against Escogido at Estadio Quisqueya Juan Marichal.  41-year-old veteran Cuban pitcher Raul Valdes hurled 7.2 innings, allowing no earned runs, in the Toros 7-2 victory.  Estrellas eliminated Licey with a 6-3 victory, the difference being a Fernando Tatis, Jr. three run homer in the bottom of the ninth.

With only three games remaining in the round-robin phase, the standings are:

VENEZUELA – three of the four semi-finalists have been decided.

Serie del Caribe host Cardenales de Lara made quick work of Bravos de Margarita, taking their first-round series four games to one.

Leones de Caracas defeated Tigres de Aragua four games to two.  Likewise, Caribes bested Magallanes four games to two.

Per the LVBP system of competition, Tigres will now play Magallanes at the Navegantes’ home park in Valencia in a one-game wildcard match-up tonight (Friday January 11).  The winner of that game will also advance to the semi-finals.

note – Magallanes won the Jan. 11 wild-card game 11-7.  The semi-final pairings are:  Magallanes at Cardenales; Caribes at Caracas.

Veteran manager Luis Dorante was named Manager of the Year in the LVBP.  After taking charge of Magallanes, the club went 25-13 the rest of the regular season to take first place in the standings.

PUERTO RICO – with 10 days left on the round-robin calendar, the standings in the semi-final round are:

¡ Feliz y próspero Año Nuevo !  The winter regular season has completed and playoffs are either underway or about to begin.  The next thirty days will determine which five teams will represent their leagues at Serie del Caribe 2019.  Here’s the latest:

CUBA

On December 19, Major League Baseball and the Cuban Baseball Federation announced their agreement on procedures for the recruitment of Cuban players by MLB clubs.  The agreement is similar to those between MLB and the top leagues in Japan, Korea, and Taiwan.   MLB’s announcement is here.

The Second Half of the Serie Nacional 58 season came down to a photo-finish on Christmas Day.  Of the six teams participating in the second half, there was a possibility of a four-way tie for second place.  Industriales had to play a make-up game against Sancti Spiritus on Dec. 25, and had the Havana club won the game, four teams would have been tied at 31-29.  However, the Blue Lions lost that key game and were eliminated from further play.  Holguin also was eliminated.  The final standings were:

The LMP teams earn points for their position finish for the first- and second-half seasons.  Points are awarded as follows:  8 points for first place, 7 for second, 6 for third, 5 for fourth, 4.5 for fifth, 4 for sixth, 3.5 for seventh, and 3 points for finishing last.  The points are added together to determine the teams that qualify (the top six) and to seed the playoff series.  The final points totals are as follows:

First-round playoff games will commence January 1 with Tomateros de Culiacan hosting Charros de Jalisco; Yaquis de Obregon hosting Venados de Mazatlán; and Naranjeros de Hermosillo hosting Caneros de Los Mochis.

Charros de Jalisco pitcher Elian Leyva won a rare “pitching triple crown” this season in the LMP.  The Cuban native led the league in wins (6), ERA (2.02) and strikeouts (67).  This past summer he pitched 87 innings with a 2.69 ERA across AA and AAA stints in the Atlanta Braves system.

VENEZUELA – the final league standings are as follows:

The top six teams advance to the first-round playoff series beginning January 3.  The pairings are:  Magallanes vs. Anzoátegui; Lara vs. Margarita; and Caracas vs. Aragua.

Veteran major-leaguer Delmon Young led the league in numerous batting categories.  Playing for Navegantes de Magallanes, he topped the circuit in HR (19), RBI (52) and runs scored (41).

Criollos de Caguas were eliminated and will not be defending their two-time Puerto Rican and Serie del Caribe titles.  The other three clubs will begin a 12-game round-robin semifinal series starting on January 2.

Play in the LVBP was cancelled for games scheduled Saturday, December 8 in memory of players José Castillo and Luis Valbuena.  The Cardenales de Lara teammates were killed in a car crash the previous day.  Both were accomplished major leaguers who were also stalwarts in the Venezuelan winter league.

I visited my good friend and béisbol amigo Ing. Juan Antonio Jasso in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico for a long weekend earlier in December.  I was a guest in his home, as well as on his weekly radio show – Peña Beisbolera on Radio Naranjeros.  Juan treated me to two Naranjeros games at Estadio Sonora.  I was also a guest at un gran carne asada at the home of his colleague Francisco Salazar.  Some pictures follow:

UPDATE – November 23, 2018

PUERTO RICO

Play began in La Liga de Béisbol  Profesional Roberto Clemente on November 15.  This year marks the 80th anniversary of the Puerto Rican winter league.  The 2018-19 season is being dedicated to Alex Cora, manager of the 2018 World Series champion Red Sox and long-time stalwart of the Criollos de Caguas franchise.

After a week of play, Indios de Mayagüez have the early lead at 4-2.  Defending LBPRC and Serie del Caribe champs Criollos are at 3-3.  Santurce is also at 3-3 and Carolina is at 2-4.  Due to ongoing repairs/upgrades at their primary fields, Criollos are playing home games at Estadio Evaristo Roldan in Gurabo and Gigantes de Carolina are playing at Estadio Hiram Bithorn in San Juan.

MEXICO – the first half of the LMP season ended on November 21, with the standings and points earned as follows:

At the midway-point, Naranjeros de Hermosillo shortstop Jasson Atondo leads the league in hitting at .392.

DOMINICANA – through the games played on Nov. 22, only two games separate the entire field in the LiDOM:

CUBA

As mentioned earlier, an important change in the system of competition was made for the Serie Nacional 58 season.  In the recent past, the six teams that advanced to the second-half competition brought their entire first-half W/L record (45 games) forward to second-half play.  This year, the advancing teams only bring forward their W/L record against the other five advancing teams (15 games).  Consequently, second-half play began with the following standings carried forward:

Winter league action is now underway in Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and Venezuela.  Serie Nacional 58 has reached the half-way mark in Cuba.  Play will begin in Puerto Rico in three weeks.  Here’s a current summary:

CUBA

Many of us were both shocked and saddened to hear of the sudden death of SABR colleague Peter Bjarkman.  The noted baseball author died of a heart attack at the Havana airport on October 1.  A brief memorial article from the SABR site is here.

The top four teams now advance to second round play.  The next four clubs in the standings entered a best-of-three wild card series to determine the additional two clubs to advance.  Industriales defeated Mayabeque and Sancti Spiritus defeated Santiago to complete the second-half field of six teams.  The second phase of SN58 – another 45 games – begins on October 26.

DOMINICANA – the 2018-19 winter season is being dedicated to recent HOF inductee Vladimir Guerrero.  Their season is now about 10 days old, and Gigantes del Cibao (San Francisco de Macoris) has an early lead with a record of 6-2.

PUERTO RICO – the 2018-19 winter season will mark the league’s 80th anniversary.  On November 15 four teams will take the field – Caguas, Mayaguez, Santurce, and Carolina.  Criollos de Caguas are two time defending champs in Puerto Rico, and of Serie del Caribe.

MEXICO – after eight games, Mazatlán, Culiacan, and Jalisco are all tied atop the league standings at 5-3.

VENEZUELA – Navigantes de Magallanes are on top of the standings at 5-2 in the early going.

NOTES FROM YOUR AUTHOR – I made a “quick trip” to Venezuela on October 17 – in a manner of speaking.  I went to the Venezuelan consulate in Houston to apply for my tourist visa in order to attend Serie del Caribe 2019 in Barquisimeto.  All of my paperwork was in order, so I’m expecting my visa in a few weeks.

Winter league action is underway in Cuba and training camps will begin in another week in most of the other winter leagues.  Here’s the latest:

CUBA – Serie Nacional 58 play has been underway for about a month, and la primera etapa – the first 45 games of the season with all 16 clubs participating – is about at the half-way point.  Here are the current standings:

MEXICO – representatives from Guasave, Sinaloa met with LMP officials in Guadalajara to discuss the possibility of the city being granted an LMP franchise.  This would have to be tied to the LMP expanding to 10 teams.  Other contenders for winter league franchises include Tijuana, Durango, Tepic, and (per rumor) Tucson.

On September 5, the LMP issued a press release stating they had been informed by the Mexican Summer League (LMB) that the LMB is planning to extend their 2019 season into November.  This will cause another escalation in tensions between the two Mexican leagues, as many Mexican nationals will then be unavailable for the first month or so of the winter league schedule.  The press release stated that LMP is focused on launching its 2018-19 season, and then will have to deal with the LMB changes.

PUERTO RICO – at the Caribbean Confederation conference held in Miami in late August, Puerto Rican officials announced a new economic plan for their winter league.  The plan seeks to improve the strength of the league by entering into a league-wide marketing/merchandising agreement, revamping financial rules governing team support, payroll and operating caps, and improving broadcasts.  The league also announced their intention to return to a six-franchise setup over the next few years.

Roster size will be expanded to 30 active players for 2018-19, with a minimum requirement of 22 native Puerto Rican players.

CARIBBEAN CONFEDERATION – at their first major meeting of the season, held August 28-30 in Miami, the winter leagues’ ruling body announced that Panama, Nicaragua, and Colombia are joining the Confederation.  Panama was one of the founding leagues, participating in Serie del Caribe from 1949-1960.  The three new countries’ leagues will participate in Serie del Caribe 2020 to be held in Puerto Rico.  The format of competition has yet to be decided, but speculation is that the three new countries will play against each other in a preliminary tournament, with the winner advancing to Serie del Caribe 2020 as a sixth contestant.

Confederation officials also hinted that future Series del Caribe will not necessarily be hosted in a participating league city; and that the traditional early February dates for Serie del Caribe may have to be adjusted.

Here are a few items of interest during the Winter Leagues’ “off season” —

CUBA – Serie Nacional 58 will begin play on August 9.  The first half of the season – during which all 16 teams participate – will run through Oct. 7 and wild-card play-in games will complete by Oct. 18.  This will narrow the field to six teams for second-half play, which will commence October 25.  The second half is scheduled to complete Dec. 22 – with the top four teams then advancing to the league championship playoffs in January.  The playoffs are due to finish no later than January 28.

A change is being made to the system-of-competition for SN58.  In the immediate past, the first-half won-loss record for the six advancing teams was carried forward – in total – to the second-half standings.  For the upcoming season, only the won-loss records among the six advancing teams will be carried forward.  So – for example – if Industriales (Havana) was 30-15 in the first half, and 10-5 against the other five clubs advancing to the second half, only the 10-5 record would be carried forward to the second half standings.  It will be interesting to see what effect this will have on the final standings.

MEXICO – in March the Liga Mexicana del Pacifico (LMP) announced that its league offices would move from Hermosillo, Sonora to Guadalajara, Jalisco.  The main reason given was so that the league HQ would be in a larger media center.

In April some key operational announcements were made.  The LMP schedule will open October 12.  League playoffs will be held throughout the month of January, 2019 and will end no later than Jan. 29.  Also, roster rules were changed in order to deal with the expanded Mexican Summer League (LMB) schedule that will run into the Fall beginning this year.  LMP active rosters were expanded to 30 players.  For the first-half season, up to 12 extranjeros (foreign-born players) can be on the roster.  In the second-half, that number is reduced to eight.  Expect to see more U.S. minor league players in LMP, both from affiliated and independent leagues.

Mazatlán team officials announced a major remodeling of Estadio Teodoro Mariscal.  Mazatlán will be the site for Serie del Caribe 2021.

DOMINICANA – a major remodeling of the press and media transmission facilities was announced for Estadio Quisqueya Juan Marichal in Santo Domingo.  The new area will be named Séptimo Cielo – Seventh Heaven.

The Dominican winter league (LiDOM) schedule will open Saturday, October 13 with a full slate featuring all six clubs.

PUERTO RICO – league president Héctor Rivera Cruz announced he was stepping down after seven years at the helm.  Sr. Cruz led the league through extremely challenging times, and was rewarded with seeing Caguas win both of the last two Series del Caribe.   Tony Flores was announced as the new president of the Liga de Béisbol Profesional Roberto Clemente (LBPRC).

Puerto Rican success continues in international play, with their club winning the baseball championship of the Central American & Caribbean Games, held in Barranquilla, Colombia.

The LBPRC schedule will get underway on November 15 with a 36-game slate.

VENEZUELA – the LVBP will open play on October 12 will all eight clubs in action.

February 9-11

PUERTO RICO WINS SERIE DEL CARIBE 2018

A crowd of 15,551 sat through a half-hour rain delay at the start of the game, but were then treated to an exciting and emotional finale on Thursday night.

Criollos de Caguas staged another dramatic comeback and successfully defended their Serie del Caribe crown.  Too many walks and a few Puerto Rico errors allowed the Dominican nine to post an early 3-0 lead.  Forty-year-old Dominican starter Raul Valdez pitched well through six innings.  However he was lifted with one out in the bottom of the seventh as Puerto Rico put their first two batters on base.  Ruben Gotay then slammed a two-RBI double and later in the inning catcher Jonathan Morales hit a three run homer to put Criollos up 6-4.  The Puerto Ricans added three more in the 8th and shut down the Dominican offense to take the game, series, and become bicampeones (two consecutive Series titles).

Final score — Puerto Rico 9 – Dominicana 4

Puerto Rican OF/DH Anthony Garcia was named Serie del Caribe 2018 MVP.

Some observations and more news:

The competition was balanced and most games were hotly contested.  The Mexican squad was eliminated from semifinal play, and my amigos were critical of the manager’s moves as well as the quality of play on the field.  Excepting the Mexican team, the overall record of the four semi-finalists I think displayed this balance:

Puerto Rico     4 wins – 2 losses

Cuba                   3 wins – 2 losses

Dominicana    3 wins – 3 losses

Venezuela        2 wins – 3 losses

The sale of two tickets per day, rather than a double-header format, made for an extremely long day.  We generally left for the ballpark at 1pm and did not return to the hotel until 1am.

The locations for upcoming Series del Caribe was announced as:  2019 – Barquisimeto, Venezuela; 2020 – Puerto Rico; 2021 – Mexico (probably Mazatlán).  There was lots of discussion regarding the possibility of returning to Mexico again next year should Venezuela not prove feasible.  There was also discussion about Cuba hosting a future Serie del Caribe.  In an interview, the head of the governing body – the Caribbean Confederation – indicated his desire to return to Havana as it was the site of the initial Serie del Caribe in 1949.  However, he indicated it would be dependent on political issues being solved, such as lifting of the U.S. embargo.

As always, a big part of Serie del Caribe for this author is renewing friendships with my friends south-of-the-border as well as with SABR colleagues.  My thanks to amigos Ignacio Romero and Juan Antonio Diaz for their friendship and help.  Likewise, many thanks to travel empresaria Thelma Acosta for making my arrangements.  I got to spend time with SABR member and well-known Mexican broadcaster and sportswriter Eddie Almada.  Good friends Lewis Rubman and his wife Gail were at the games (see picture below), with Lewis reporting for a Bay Area sports service.

Finally – as always – Saludos a mi buen amigo Juan Antonio Jasso who was not able to attend this year.  We have been good friends for over seven years and I hope to see him again soon.

PUERTO RICO WILL DEFEND SERIE DEL CARIBE CROWN VS. DOMINICANA

Puerto Rico 6 – Venezuela 5

Criollos de Caguas staged a dramatic comeback to defeat Caribes and advance to the Serie del Caribe 2018 final game.  Venezuela starter Daryl Thompson was cruising into the 6th inning with a 2-hitter in hand and his club leading 4-0.  But then two singles and a walk loaded the bases.  Thompson was relieved by Nestor Molina, who then faced Puerto Rican slugger Anthony Garcia.  Garcia promptly hit a blast over the wall for a game tying grand slam.  Venezuela took the lead again in the bottom of the seventh, only to be overcome by a 2-run Puerto Rican 8th inning.  The defending champs held on for an emotional 6-5 victory and a boleto to the finals.

Dominicana 7 – Cuba 4

Cuba took an early 3-0 lead as Freddy Cepeda drove in the first run with a 2nd inning triple, and then scored on a Dominican throwing error.  The Dominicans put up two runs in the top of the 6th on a homer by Ronny Rodriguez.  A succession of Cuban relievers could not shut the door as Aguilas Cibaenas scored three more in the 7th and two more in the 8th.  Despite committing four errors, and a Freddy Cepeda solo homer in the 8th, the Dominicans prevailed and advance to the finals on Thursday night.

Game attendance was announced as 14,050 – a great turnout considering the Mexican home team has been eliminated.

The Serie del Caribe final will be Thursday night, February 8, at 8pm (U.S. central time).  Stay tuned …

The day opened with the annual induction of new members to the Serie del Caribe Hall of Fame. Darryl Brinkley, Jaime Orozco and Cornelio Garcia were inducted into the Salon de Fama.

Mexico avoided being swept at home, but still will not advance to the semifinals.

February 5

“Jose Cuervo, he was a friend of mine …” and even more so as our group took a trip out to Tequila, Jalisco and toured the Jose Cuervo plant.

The Dominican victory ensures that Mexico will not qualify for the semi-finals even if they win their last game.

February 4

Dominicana 6 – Puerto Rico 3

What a difference a day makes for the Dominicans. They put up five runs through the second inning and held on to beat the defending champs. Lots of singles in this game as there was a total of 26 hits between the two teams.

Venezuela 6 – Mexico 4

Solo homers by Rafael Ortega and Williams Astudil contributed to a 6-2 Venezuela lead going into the bottom of the ninth. Long time LMP and LMB star Chris Roberson entered the game to pinch hit for Mexico in the bottom of the ninth and blasted a two run homer to narrow the Venezuelan lead, but los Caribes held on for the win. The host team is now 0-3 and facing elimination.

Observations on Estadio Panamericano – also known as Estadio Charros de Jalisco, this stadium was built in 2011 to host the Pan American Games. In 2014 the LMP franchise from Guasave moved to Guadalajara and play here. The stadium originally seated 8,000 but was upgraded to 11,500 to host baseball. It has since been expanded to 13,000. The outfield dimensions are 330 ft. down both lines and 415 ft. to center. It has a reputation as a hitters ballpark and we have seen numerous homers down the lines and to the alleys. It has artificial turf and that has been a factor as some batted balls take very high bounces, as well as the infield playing fast.

February 3

Venezuela 15 – Dominicana 4

Los Caribes de Anzoategui tallied 20 hits to even their record at 1-1. Venezuelan slugger Balbino Fuenmayor blasted two homers and a double to tally five RBI. The Dominicans committed two key errors to contribute to the beating.

Cuba 5 – Mexico 4

Alazanes de Granma again played error-free ball and scored two in the seventh and one in the eighth to post a come-from-behind win. Cuba is now 2-0 and Mexico 0-2 through two days of play. The big home crowd was not happy with the results so far.

February 2

Let the games begin! Here are the opening day results:

Cuba 6 – Venezuela 4

The Cuban team played error-free ball and escaped a ninth inning jam to take Game One. Venezuela had the bases loaded with DH Balbino Fuenmayor at the plate but los cubanos escaped to take the opener.

Opening Ceremonies – this was a pleasant spectacle of fireworks, dancing, singing and the playing of all the clubs´ national anthems. An unexpected highlight (at least to the Americans at the game) was an appearance by former president Bill Clinton. He gave a brief, friendly welcoming speech. In a nice touch, he spent a considerable amount of time at the Puerto Rican dugout shaking hands and inquiring about players´ families.

Puerto Rico 7 – Mexico 4

In a repeat of last year`s final, the Puerto Rican team mounted a 15-hit attack to open the defense of their Caribbean Series title. A highlight of the game was an attempted straight steal of home in the top of the third inning. The Puerto Rican runner was called out at the plate, the play was appealed, and the call was upheld to the (temporary) delight of the big Mexican crowd.

Finally the field is set for Serie del Caribe 2018.  Last night in Santo Domingo, Aguilas de Cibaeñas defeated Tigres del Licey 11-5.  This was the 21st LiDOM title for Aguilas (Licey leads with 22).  Fortunately for the winners, they have a bye on Day 1 (tomorrow) of Serie del Caribe.

January 30 – there will be a decisive Game Seven in the Dominican winter league finals!  In the doubleheader played today at Estadio Cibao, Aguilas and Licey split – with the home team taking the opener 5-2 and los Tigres winning the nightcap 4-3.  Game 7 will be played at Estadio Quisqueya Juan Marichal in Santo Domingo on Wednesday evening.

 

January 29 – in the remaining final series in the Dominican Republic, Licey bested Aguilas 10-1 in a Game Four marred by five ejections.  The two clubs are even at 2-2 in the best-of-seven series and play returns to Estadio Cibao Tuesday for a double-header.  Stay tuned …

MEXICO

Tomateros de Culiacán tied the game with a run in the top of the ninth and scored the decisive runs in the 12th inning  to defeat host Mayos de Navajoa 6-4 in an exciting Game Seven of the LMP Finals.  They will make the short trip to Jalisco state to represent the hosts in Serie del Caribe 2018.

CUBA

Alazanes de Granma are bicampeones  after defeating Las Tunas 3-2 in Game Seven before more than 20,000 disappointed Leñadores fans.  Granma successfully defended their Serie Nacional title and will represent the Pearl of the Antilles in Serie del Caribe 2018.

DOMINICANA – ¡ Más lluvia !  For the third time in the final series a game was rained out.  Game 4 will be moved to Santo Domingo for Monday night’s game, and a double-header will be played back at Estadio Cibao Tuesday (if both games are needed).  If the series goes to seven games, that will be held back in Santo Domingo on Wednesday.

 

January 27 – We have some league winners!

PUERTO RICO 

Los Criollos de Caguas swept the LBPRC best-of-five final series 3-0 against Santurce and become bicampeones of the Enchanted Island.  They will defend their Serie del Caribe crown in Guadalajara.

VENEZUELA

Los Caribes de Anzoátegui took the LVBP title four games to two against Cardenales de Lara.

MEXICO – Mayos de Navajoa tied up the LMP final series at home against los Tomateros de Culiacan.  Los Mayos staged a dramatic two run rally in the bottom of the ninth to take Game Six 4-3.   Game Seven will be 5pm local time Sunday at Estadio Manuel “Ciclon” Echeverria in Navajoa, Sonora.

CUBA – Las Tunas forced the SN57 final series to Game Seven by winning 6-2 at home against defending champs Granma.  Game Seven will be 2pm local time Sunday at Estadio Julio A. Mella in Las Tunas.

DOMINICANA – more rain delays as Saturday’s game was washed out.   The final series resumes Sunday afternoon at Estadio Cibao with Aguilas (Santiago) leading Licey (Santo Domingo) 2-1.

 

January 26 – la Serie del Caribe is fast-approaching, with play set to begin in Guadalajara, Mexico on Friday, February 2.  As of play ending Friday night, January 26, none of the league champions have yet to be determined.  However that will surely change over the weekend.

Previously … after tying for second place in the round-robin “semi-finals” series, Aguilas hosted Escogido at Estadio Cibao on Sunday, Jan. 21.  Aguilas registered a convincing 7-0 victory to advance to the finals to meet Licey.  Los Tigres will host the first game at Estadio Quisqueya Juan Marichal on Tuesday evening.

PUERTO RICO – Defending LBPRC and Serie del Caribe champs Criollos de Caguas lead Santurce 2-0 in the best-of-five final series:

Previously – in the sudden-death wild card game, Santurce prevailed over Mayaguez 2-1.  The Cangrejeros therefore advance to the five-game final series against defending LBPRC and Serie del Caribe champs Criollos de Caguas.

At the completion of the 18-game regular season, the standings were:

Los Indios and Cangrejeros will meet in a sudden-death game on Wednesday, January 24 to determine who will advance to the final series against the defending champions Criollos.

January 20 – the Caribbean Series opens in just 12 days, and the league finals are in-progress or are just about to start.  Here’s the latest:

MEXICO – in the semi-finals of the LMP, Tomateros de Culiacan swept Mexicali four games to none and Mayos de Navajoa defeated Charros de Jalisco 4-2.  This sets up the league finals with Navajoa hosting Culiacan for game one of the best-of-seven choque.

Game One update – Tomateros defeated Mayos 4-0 behind a complete game, one hitter by Culiacan starter Anthony Vasquez.

VENEZUELA – Cardenales de Lara swept Magallanes 4-0 to take their semi-final series.  The Cardenales have been playing well all season.  Caribes de Anzoátegui prevailed over Caracas 4-1.  Therefore, Cardenales will have home-field advantage for the best-of-seven finals.  Los finales open in Barquisimeto tonight.

Game One update – Caribes defeated Cardenales 4-2, disappointing the 18,107 Lara aficianados.

CUBA

¡Al combate, corred, Bayameses!  Granma fans storm the field in Bayamo as los Alazanes clinch their semi-final series.  The defending champs were underdogs vs. Matanzas, but they prevailed four games to one.

In the other semi-final series, Las Tunas and Industriales went to a decisive seventh game with Las Tunas winning 10-0.  Las Tunas will therefore open at home in the final series.

Game One update – Las Tunas won at home 6-5 over Granma.

DOMINICANA – the “semi-final” round-robin results are as follows:

Escogido outfielder Franchy Cordero has been named both the regular season league MVP and the Rookie of the Year.  The 23-year-old debuted with the San Diego Padres this year after posting a .972 OPS with El Paso of the AAA PCL.

Los Cocodrilos de Matanzas won 9 of their last 1o to overtake Las Tunas for 1st place.  The semi-final best-of-seven series open January 4 with Matanzas hosting defending champion Granma, and Las Tunas hosting Industriales (Havana).

Alfredo Despaigne was named Cuban player-of-the-year for 2017 based upon his outstanding season in Japan with the Softbank Falcons and his SN56 post-season play with the defending champion Granma Alazanes.

MEXICO – the LMP regular season wrapped up on December 29.  Counting points earned for both the first- and second-half seasons, here are the final consolidated standings:

The top six teams now advance to the “quarter-finals”.  Tomateros de Culiacan will open the best-of-seven series at home against Charros de Jalisco.  Likewise, Aguilas de Mexicali will host Venados de Mazatlán and Mayos de Navojoa will host Naranjeros de Hermosillo.  You might ask how this can be the “quarter-finals” when there are only three match-ups?  Not only will the three winners advance, but the losing team with the best playoff record will also advance.

VENEZUELA – likewise, the LVBP finished their rol regular on December 29.  The top six clubs will advance to the post-season in a playoff format similar to Mexico’s.  Final standings are:

PUERTO RICO – due to the extensive damage from Hurricane Maria, the winter league in Puerto Rico will play an abbreviated schedule beginning on Three Kings Day – January 5.  Four teams – Santurce, Carolina, Caguas, and Mayaguez/Aguadilla – will play an 18-game schedule due to complete January 23.

After this shortened rol regular, the 2nd and 3rd place finishers will play a single wild-card game, with the winner advancing to a best-of-five final series vs. the 1st place finisher.  The winner then advances to defend Puerto Rico’s 2017 Serie del Caribe championship.

November 26 – play continues south of the border as the Latin American winter leagues enter their final month of “regular season” action.  Here’s the latest:

MEXICO – first-half play in the LMP (Liga Mexicana del Pacifico) concluded on Sunday, November 19.  First-half results were:

Naranjeros de Hermosillo were awarded first place, and the eight points that go along with it, by virtue of their winning the first-half series against both Tomateros de Culiacan and Venados de Mazatlán.

Second-half play is now only a week old, with Aguilas de Mexicali and Venados tied for the lead at 4-1.

Sebastian Elizalde of the Tomateros leads LMP hitters with a .383 batting average.  He is a Reds farmhand who had a solid summer season at Louisville of the International League, recording a .707 OPS in 134 games played.

Las Tunas and Matanzas have played well in the second half and seem to be consolidating their positions as 1-2.  Artemisa and Pinar will both have to rally to make the playoffs (the top four clubs advance to the semi-finals in January).  There are four weeks remaining in the SN57 regular season.

Veteran Las Tunas DH/OF Danel Castro logged his 2000th hit in Serie Nacional play earlier this month.  He is only the 21st player to achieve that mark in 57 years of SN play.

DOMINICANA

Tigres del Licey are celebrating the club’s 110th anniversary this season.  They have achieved 22 LiDOM league titles and won 10 Series del Caribe in their long, successful history.

PUERTO RICO – as the Enchanted Island continues to recover from Hurricane Maria, planning continues for a short 21-game “regular season” to begin January 6.

In the meantime, Puerto Ricans can celebrate the naming of Dave Martinez as manager of the Washington Nationals.  A New Yorker of Puerto Rican heritage, he joins Alex Cora as current dirigentes puertorriqueños en Grandes Ligas.

November 3 – there’s no need for “baseball withdrawal” after an exciting World Series in the U.S. — there’s plenty of baseball action south of the border.  Here are some highlights:

CUBA – Serie Nacional 57 second-half action is underway.  Defending champs Granma, along with Artemisa, won their wild-card rounds and join Industriales, Las Tunas, Matanzas, and Pinar del Rio in second-half action.  Each of the advancing six teams selected five refuerzos (reinforcements) from the rosters of the teams that were eliminated.  Slugging DH/1B Frederich Cepeda was drafted by Pinar del Rio.

PUERTO RICO – native son Alex Cora is having a great baseball year.  The native of Caguas has played, managed, and been the GM of hometown Criollos de Caguas and they won la Serie del Caribe in February.  He was GM of the Puerto Rican team in the World Baseball Classic, and they had a great run finishing second in March.  He has just won a World Series as bench coach for the Astros.  And to top it off, he has signed a multi-year deal to become manager of the Boston Red Sox.

October 17 – the Cuban Serie Nacional has reached the half-way mark and the winter leagues are now underway in Mexico, Dominicana, and Venzuela.  Here’s the latest:

CUBA – SN57 has completed the first half of its season.  The top-four teams in the standings advance to the second half.  They are:

1-Industriales, 2-Las Tunas, 3-Matanzas, 4-Pinar del Rio

The teams in positions 5-8 advance to best-of-three wildcard series, as follows:

5-Granma (the defending SN champion) plays 8-Villa Clara; and 6-Artemisa plays 7-Ciego de Avila.  The two winners will also advance to the second half of the season.

MEXICO – the Liga Mexicana del Pacifico has completed its first week of play.  Culiacan and Jalisco are in the early lead with perfect 5-0 records.

DOMINICANA – likewise, the LiDOM is also under way.  Escogido, Estrellas and Gigantes are all 2-0.

VENEZUELA – Tigres de Aragua and Aguilas de Zulia are 4-1, with Leones de Caracas at 5-2.

October 7 – the weather made big news for baseball in Latin America.  Mother Nature and her offspring Irma, Maria, and the Terremoto twins caused havoc in Cuba, Puerto Rico, and Mexico.

CUBA – Hurricane Irma forced the postponement of two series (six games) of Serie Nacional 57.  These games are being made up now in order to complete the first half of the season and determine which six of the sixteen clubs will advance to the second half of the SN57 season.

Riding a 5-game winning streak Las Tunas has pulled to within a half-game of first-place Industriales (Havana) and both clubs have passed Pinar del Rio – who now sit in third place after going 3-7 in their last 10 games.  First-half games are due to complete October 9.

Your author had the unique experience of attending Cubaball 2017 in late September.  Our weeklong trip to see Cuban baseball is the creation of SABR member Kit Krieger, and was hosted this year by his brother Bob, travel empresario Clem Paredes Rodriguez, and Cuban baseball expert and writer Peter Bjarkman.  We visited ballparks in Havana, Cienfuegos, Santa Clara, Artemisa, and Pinar del Rio.  The interaction with Cuban ballplayers – past and present – as well as the Cuban people was memorable.   I would recommend this trip to any aficionado of beisbol latinoamericano.

PUERTO RICO – Hurricane Maria caused tremendous damage to the island and has forced a major postponement of the winter season.  At a press conference held Thursday (October 5), it was announced that a much-shortened season would begin January 6, 2018.  The “regular season” will consist of 21 games, played during the day and including Saturday and Sunday doubleheaders.  Admission will be free.  A short playoff series will be held in late January to determine which team will advance to the Caribbean Series.  Puerto Rico is the defending Serie del Caribe champion.

MEXICO – a two-game All Star Series was held jointly by the summer (LMB) and winter (LMP) leagues as a demonstration of cooperation and solidarity in support of earthquake victims.  The teams were integrated across the two leagues and the games were held in Culiacan (home of the LMP Tomateros) and Monterrey (home of the LMB Sultanes) on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1.

The winter regular season will commence next week in MEXICO (Oct. 10), VENEZUELA (Oct. 10), and DOMINICANA (Oct. 13).

September 3 – the Caribbean Confederation, the ruling body of Latin American winter leagues, held its Assembly of Presidents in Jalisco, Mexico and confirmed details of the upcoming Serie del Caribe 2018 to be held in Zapopan, Jalisco, Mexico.  Items of note are:

Schedule – the Series will open Friday February 2 and conclude on Thursday February 8.  The complete schedule is posted above.

Format of competition – the five-team format used since Cuba re-entered competition in 2014 will be continued.  The five clubs (the champions of the Cuban, Mexican, Dominican, Puerto Rican, and Venezuelan winter leagues) will play an initial four game round-robin.  When the round-robin phase is concluded, the bottom team in the standings will be eliminated and the top four teams will enter a knock-out semi-final round.  The two semi-final winners will then play one game for the championship.

Estadio Charros expansion – the host ballpark will be expanded from 12,000 to 16,000 seats, using private investment committed for the project.

Cuban participation – the commissioner of the Caribbean Confederation, Juan Francisco Puello, was asked about the current and future status of Cuban participation in the Series.  He commented that the Cubans are again participating as invitees in 2018, but that he was confident that they would eventually rejoin the Caribbean Confederation.  When asked a follow-up as to when that might occur, he responded “That depends on the politics.”

VENEZUELA – the LVBP announced that it will proceed with its 2017-18 schedule after the government committed $10M USD from its foreign exchange reserves to help the league buy equipment and pay for the contracts of imported players.

PUERTO RICO – the LBPRC announced approval for a new ownership group for the Santurce franchise.  Also announced were cost-control measures for the upcoming 2017-18 season, including playing more doubleheaders.

MEXICO -the LMP has changed their roster rules to increase the number of foreign-born players allowed per active club roster to eight (8).  This is viewed as a necessary hedge should the Mexican summer league (LMB) follow through with its plans to play an elongated split-season schedule in summer-fall 2018.  Should the LMB extend its schedule into November 2018, this will impact the number of Mexican players that would be available to the LMP for the first month of the Mexican winter league schedule.

August 4 – the start of the Winter Leagues is upon us!  Serie Nacional 57 opens play in Cuba on August 5 with defending champs Granma hosting Villa Clara.  Here are a few news items from the “off season”:

CHANGE IN LOCATION FOR SERIE DEL CARIBE 2018 – The host location for the upcoming Caribbean Series had been announced as Barquisimeto, Lara, Venezuela.  However, due to the ongoing social and political unrest in Venezuela, the Caribbean Confederation voted on June 14 to move the Series to Mexico.  The Liga Mexicana del Pacifico (LMP) then promptly voted to host Serie del Caribe 2018 in Guadalajara, Jaliso.

The location for the upcoming Series will be Estadio Charros in Zapopan, Jalisco State, a suburb of Guadalajara.  This is the same stadium that hosted second-round play in the World Baseball Classic 2017, and is the home field of the Charros de Jalisco club of the LMP.

INTER-LEAGUE CONTROVERSY IN MEXICO – the Liga Mexicana de Beisbol (LMB), the Mexican summer league, has announced plans to operate a split-season in 2018 that will extend that league’s schedule into November.  This will overlap with the beginning of the winter league schedule of the LMP, as well as cause conflicts among those players that currently play in both the LMB and LMP.

PUERTO RICO WINS SERIE DEL CARIBE 2017

Puerto Rico defeated Mexico 1-0 in ten innings to win their first Caribbean Series crown since the 1999-2000 Winter Season.  Yadiel Rivera doubled to lead off the top of the tenth, was sacrificed to third, and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Jonathan Morales.

Mexico was held to only four hits by the Criollos pitching staff.

Puerto Rican third baseman David Vidal was voted MVP of Serie del Caribe 2017.

REFLECTIONS ON SERIE DEL CARIBE 2017

This was my seventh Serie del Caribe and I feel that it was the best one yet.  Estadio Tomateros is a major-league quality facility, but with only half the capacity.  You are close to the action but have all the amenities of an MLB stadium.  The city of Culiacán, Club Tomateros, and the LMP rolled out the red carpet for the fans.  The stadium was filled to capacity every evening that the home team played.  Attendance at capacity was usually reported as 19,177 tickets sold, but the total figure from the pressbox was in excess of 24,000.

I felt that the level of competition was very equal across the five clubs, with the possible exception of Dominicana.  Cuba fielded a strong club and I was told that their roster would closely resemble the national team that will play next month in the World Baseball Classic.  Mexico and Venezuela were strong as usual.  And of course the Puerto Rican club got hot late in the tournament and took the crown.

A big muchas gracias to my good friend Juan Antonio Jasso (with me in picture below) and his wife Carmen for hosting me before and after Serie del Caribe.  They were very gracious to put me up at their beautiful home in Concordia, Sinaloa and take me back and forth to the Mazatlan airport, as well as to and from Culiacán.  Their kindness greatly added to my enjoyment.

POSTSCRIPT – WHAT’S NEXT ? — Here are a few rumors and other topics that I read or heard while in Mexico:  Serie del Caribe 2018 is scheduled for Barquisimeto, Venezuela.  Should the political and social concerns in Venezuela not settle down somewhat, there was much discussion as to where the upcoming Serie del Caribe might be relocated.  The most common alternative, should it be needed, is to return to Mexico.  The best bets among LMP venues are either Ciudad Obregón (new stadium) or Guadalajara (large city, lots of accommodations for incoming fans).

There was also talk about when Cuba might be expected to take its turn in hosting a Serie del Caribe.  The Cubans would have to first rejoin the Caribbean Baseball Confederation, as they have been participating as an invited guest since 2014.  That will supposedly happen in 2018.  So the current thinking is that the Cubans will host no earlier than 2020.

Another topic concerns what other countries may enter (or re-enter) the Caribbean Baseball Confederation and send a representative to a future Serie del Caribe.  Newspaper articles in Culiacán speculated that Panama may re-enter the competition in the next few years.

DAY SIX February 6, 2017

Puerto Rico and Mexico advance to the finals of Serie del Caribe 2017 !

Puerto Rico defeated Venezuela 9-6 in Game One today to qualify for tomorrow´s final.  The Puerto Rican club will be looking for their first Serie del Caribe title since 2000.  The home team from Mexico will provide the opposition as they defeated Cuba 1-0.  Mexico will strive to win their fifth title in the past seven series.

Puerto Rico 9 – Venezuela 6 — Puerto Rico´s offense continued to fire on all cylinders as they jumped to a 8-0 lead and held on for the win.  Six Puerto Rican starters had at least one RBI, with David Vidal slugging his third homer of the series.  Venezuela tallied 16 hits and 4 walks but could not overcome the early Criollos outburst.

Mexico 1 – Cuba 0 — in a rematch of last night´s game, Mexico was able to prevail on the strength of starter Miguel Pena´s five innings and shutout relief from the bullpen.  The Mexican pitching staff allowed only 2 hits and 2 walks.  Cuban starter Lazaro Blanco allowed only one run in 7 innings, but took the tough loss.

DAY FIVE February 5, 2017

Venezuela 4 – Dominicana 3 — Rene Reyes homered with Ronnie Cedeño aboard in the bottom of the 8th to give Venezuela a come-from-behind victory over Dominicana.  For the second consecutive year the Dominican team was swept in the Serie del Carie round-robin.

Cuba 4 – Mexico 0 — Alfredo Despaigne broke out of a slump with the 3-run homer to power the Cuban squad past defending champions Mexico.  The home team could not solve Cuban starter Vladimir Banos, who pitched 8.2 innings for the win.

This concludes the round-robin phase of Serie del Caribe 2017.  The standings are:

The Cuban team was awarded first place in the round-robin due to tie-breaker rules.

DAY FOUR February 4, 2017

Pre-game, we took a field trip to the Sinaloa Baseball Museum and Academy.

This facility is a state-of-the-art interactive baseball museum and also a baseball development academy.  My understanding is that it was built with funding by the state of Sinaloa and MLB serves in an advisory capacity.  The museum was impressive.  I was able to walk out among the ball fields, however the coaches were not interested in seeing me take a few swings …

 

Puerto Rico 10 – Dominicana 2 — the Dominican club is eliminated, for the second straight year, and Criollos de Caguas advance to the semi-finals.  Rusney Castillo led the PR attack with a homer and three RBIs.  Ivan de Jesús, Jr. added two RBI and scored three times.  Eight Licey pitchers could not stop the Puerto Rican offensive outburst.

Venezuela 8 – Cuba 3 — Venezuela mounted a 15-hit attack, led by Freddy Galvis and Ronnie Cedeno with three each.  Cuban starter Freddy Alvarez was lifted with only one out in the first inning after Venezuela jumped out to a 3-0 lead.  Cuban 2B Carlos Benitez tied the game in the second with a 3-run homer.  However, Venezuela continued to chip away at the Cuban bullpen and took advantage of two Cuba errors to post the win.  Wil Ledezma was the winner in relief for Zulia.

DAY THREE February 3, 2017

Today was the induction ceremony for the Caribbean Series Hall of Fame.

The inductees, from left to right, are:

Vinnie Castilla, Erubiel Durazo, Miguel Flores, Benjamin Reyes (accepted posthumously by his son), Alfonso Araujo Bojórquez, and Juan Manuel Ley (accepted posthumously by his son)

 

 

 

Cuba 6 – Puerto Rico 1 — Cuban pitching was sharp again, with starter Vladimir Garcia going six innings for the win and the Cuban bullpen again held their opponents scoreless.  William Saavedra´s 2-run homer in the 7th sealed the win for Cuba.  The Cuban squad continued to look strong on both offense and defense.

Mexico 5 – Venezuela 1 — This game was Águilas contra Águilas – Eagles vs. Eagles.  Sebastián Valle´s walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the ninth won the game for Méxicali.  Barry Enright started for Mexico and pitched 5 strong innings allowing only one run.  The Mexican bullpen wrapped up with four scoreless innings and Oliver Perez got the win.

With these results, the standings for todos-contra-todos – the round robin phase – after three days of play are:

DAY TWO February 2, 2017

We were joined at breakfast by Eduardo Almada, a fellow SABR member and well-known broadcaster and columnist.  Eddie is also the son of Baldomero “Melo” Almada, the first Mexican-born pelotero to play in the U.S. major leagues.  We had a far-ranging discussion with Eddie on baseball topics both north- and south-of-the-border.

We had a late lunch at the stadium club at Estadio Tomateros:

Venezuela 4 – Puerto Rico 3 — Venezuelan catcher Jesus Flores´ 2-run homer in the top of the second put Zulia ahead to stay.  David Vidal homered for Caguas in the 8th to make it close at 4-3, but that was how the final score stood.

Mexico 7 – Dominicana 2 — Jason Bourgeois 2 RBI triple put Mexicali ahead in the fifth inning and CJ Retherford´s 3-run homer in the top of the seventh broke the game open.  Chris Roberson was 4-5 with two runs scored.  Starter Hector Velazquez pitched five innings for the win and the bullpen shut down Licey the rest of the way.  The game was another sellout with attendance over 19,000.

DAY ONE February 1, 2017

Cuba 4 – Dominicana 0 — Cuban leadoff hitter Roel Santos tripled and scored on a passed ball in the top of the first.  That was all the offense Cuba needed as they posted a shutout in the Series opener.  Granma starter Lazaro Blanco threw 6.1 innings and was relieved by Liran Moinelo who got all of the final eight outs.

Mexico 4 – Puerto Rico 2 — Mexicali stalwart Chris Roberson broke a 1-1 tie with a two run homer in the bottom of the seventh.  Yunieski Betancourt added a homer in the 8th to give Mexico an insurance run.  Mexican starter Daniel Rodriguez and three relievers allowed only five Criollos hits.

Opening Ceremonies — we were treated to a fantastic light show and Dodgers rookie pitcher Julio Urias threw out the ceremonial first pitch.  Attendance was announced at 19,177.

I´ve arrived in Culiacan, Sinaloa and the city is hopping with anticipation of the start of Serie del Caribe.  On the TV news this morning, they are reporting that all hotels in the Culiacan metro area are lleno (sold out).

THE FINAL FIELD IS SET FOR SERIE DEL CARIBE 2017:

The five champions of the participating winter leagues have been determined, as follows:

Águilas de Méxicali wins its fourth LMP title.  The Eagles represent the Baja California city of Mexicali.  Their home park is Estadio B-Air.

 

Tigres del Licey is one of the most-storied of Dominican clubs.  The 2016-17 LiDOM title is their 22nd.  Their home field is Estadio Quisqueya Juan Marichal in the capital city of Santo Domingo.

Criollos de Caguas is a historic Puerto Rican team and this year’s title is the 17th in their history.  They play at Parque Yldefonso Sola’ Morales in the central Puerto Rican city of Caguas.

Águilas del Zulia won its sixth Venezuelan title and appear in Serie del Caribe for the first time in 17 years.  They play in Estadio Luis Aparacio in Maracaibo.

Alazanes de Granma won its first Serie Nacional title.  The Sorrel Colts play in Bayamo, the seat of Granma province.

Serie del Caribe 2017 will get underway Wednesday, February 1 in Culiacán, Sinaloa, Mexico, the capital city of the state of Sinaloa.  The tournament will run through February 7 (see the game schedule, below).  The site will be the one-year-old Estadio Tomateros (also known by its naming-rights as Estadio BBVA Bancomer).  The stadium has a capacity of 20,000 with dimensions of 322′ down both foul lines and 410′ in straight-away center field.

The winter league winners from Mexico, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, and Cuba will again compete for the title of “The Caribbean World Series”.  The system of competition will be the same as in the past few years:

Phase 1 – A five-team, four-game round robin after which the bottom team will be eliminated.

Phase 2 – Two semi-final games pitting the #1 vs. #4 finishers and the #2 vs. #3 finishers from Phase 1.

Final – A single-game finale between the two semi-final winners.

WINTER LEAGUE PLAYOFFS 2017

January 28, 2017

MEXICO – Méxicali clinched the LMP crown with a 13-1 victory at Los Mochis.  Águilas took the series 4 games to 2.  This is the fourth league championship for the Eagles and their first since the 1998-99 season.

 

DOMINICANA – the LiDOM final series went all the way to a ninth and final game.  Emilio Bonifacio’s three-RBI double in the decisive top of the 6th inning powered Tigres del Licey to the win over Águilas Cibaeñas 6-2.  This is Licey’s 22nd Dominican league title.

 

January 25, 2017

PUERTO RICO – Caguas defeated Santurce 6-5 in 12 innings before a standing-room-only home crowd of 11,200 at Parque Yldefonso Sola Morales.  Los Criollos thereby clinch the Puerto Rican winter crown, 5 games to 3, and advance to La Serie del Caribe 2017.

 

VENEZUELA – Águilas del Zulia clinched the Venezuelan title with a 5-2 win at home over Cardenales de Lara.  Zulia prevailed four games to one in the finals.  Over 19,800 fans were in attendance at Estadio Luis Aparicio in Maracaibo to see their club take their first Venezuelan title in 17 years.

 

In MEXICO, Los Mochis and Méxicali are tied 2-2 in their best-of-seven final series.  In the DOMINICAN REPUBLIC, Licey leads Águilas 4-2 in their best-of-nine finals.   Both series continue their action tonight.

January 23, 2017

CUBA – Granma swept by Ciego de Ávila four games to none and clinched its first-ever Serie Nacional championship.  Los Alazanes dispatched the defending SN champions in the finals after sending home the regular-season champion Matanzas club in the semi-finals.  This is the first corona for Granma in its 40 seasons competing in Serie Nacional.

If, like me, the name “Granma” sounds familiar, it is not only the name of the Cuban province where the club plays, but also the name of the yacht that brought Castro and his revolutionaries back to Cuba from Mexico in 1956.  El yate is featured in the team logo.  Furthermore, it is the name of the official party newspaper published in Havana.

Granma now advances to la Serie del Caribe and awaits the determination of the other four league champions.

PUERTO RICO – Caguas leads Santurce 4-3 in the best-of-nine finals.

DOMINICANA – Licey and Águilas are tied 2-2 in the best-of-nine finale.

VENEZUELA – Zulia leads Lara 2-0 in the best-of-seven finals.

MEXICO – Los Mochis and Méxicali are tied 1-1 in the best-of-seven finale.

January 20, 2017 – both Mexican Pacific League semi-finals went down to a deciding seventh game last night:

Méxicali prevailed over Hermosillo 4-3 in 16 innings at Estadio B-Air in Baja California.

Los Mochis defeated Culiacán 3-1 to join Méxicali in the LMP finals.  Los Cañeros will have the home-field advantage and will host the opening game of the best-of-seven finale in Los Mochis on Saturday, January 21.

The other four Winter League final series situations are:

CUBA – Granma leads Ciego de Ávila 2 games – none in their best-of-seven series.

DOMINICANA – Águilas lead Licey 1-0 in their best-of-nine series.

VENEZUELA – Lara and Zulia open the final series tonight.

Águilas were in command of the todos-contra-todos from the beginning, opening up a comfortable lead and clinching a spot in the finals with several games to play.  Licey and Gigantes battled to the final game for the second ticket to the finals, with Licey prevailing by one game.

Águilas will have the home-field advantage in the best-of-nine final series and will host Licey at Estadio Cibao on Thursday January 19th.

VENEZUELA – Cardenales de Lara and Águilas de Zulia both prevailed in the semi-final rounds by dispatching their opponents 4 games to 1.  The seven-game final series will open on Friday January 20 with regular-season champs Cardenales opening at home in Barquisimeto hosting Zulia.

January 16, 2017

CUBA – after compiling a 70-win season and leading in the standings the entire way, los Cocodrilos de Matanzas were upset in a seven game semi-final series by Granma.  The “Chestnut Colts” now advance to the finals to play defending Serie Nacional champs Ciego de Ávila.  The SN56 finals begin Wednesday, January 18.

Here’s the latest in the Latin American Winter Leagues playoffs as of January 12, 2017

PUERTO RICO – the first round (semi-finals) of the LBPRC finished on Wednesday January 11.  Regular-season winner Santurce advances to the finals by defeating Carolina 4 games to 1.  Regular-season runner-up Mayaguez was upset by Caguas 4-2.

The LBPRC finals therefore will feature los Cangrejeros de Santurce holding the home-field advantage over Criollos de Caguas in the 9-game final series beginning Saturday, January 14.

VENEZUELA – first round (quarter-finals) play also concluded Wednesday January 11 in the LVBP.  Results are:

Cardenales de Lara prevailed over Margarita, 4 games to 3.

Águilas de Zulia swept Tigres de Aragua 4-0.

Caribes de Anzoátegui prevailed over Tiburones de La Guaira 4-3.

In the LVBP, the wild card is determined by a one-game play-in pitting the two losing first-round teams with the best regular-season records.  This resulted in a loser-goes-home game between La Guaira and Aragua.  This game was held Wednesday night, January 11 in Maracay.  The Sharks won 4-2 and also advance to the semi-finals.

The LVBP semi-finals begin January 12 with Lara hosting La Guaira in Barquisimeto and with Caribes hosting Zulia in Puerto la Cruz.

MEXICO – first round action wrapped up in the LMP on Monday January 9.  The first round series concluded as follows:

Los Mochis defeated Mazatlan four games to one.

Mexicali defeated Navojoa four games to two.

Hermosillo prevailed over Culiacán four games to three.  Over 19,000 fans witnessed game seven at Estadio Tomateros, the site of the upcoming Serie del Caribe.  Both clubs advance to the semi-finals as los Tomateros qualify as the comodín (wild card) with the best record among the first-round losing teams.

The LMP semi-finals will commence on January 11, with the pairings as follows:

Los Mochis will host Culiacán and will have the home-field advantage in the 2-3-2 best-of-seven series format.

Likewise, Mexicali will host Hermosillo and have the home-field advantage.

DOMINICANA – the LiDOM first-round, round robin play continues with the standings at:

After the 18-game round-robin is completed, the top two teams will advance to the Dominican finals.

SERIE DEL CARIBE SALON DE FAMA – this year’s inductees will be players Vinny Castilla, Erubiel Durazo and Miguel Flores; executive Juan Manuel Ley; manager Benjamin Cananea-Reyes, and sportswriter Alfonso Araujo Bojórquez.  My good friend Juan Antonio Jasso advises that the induction ceremonies will be Friday February 3 in Culiacán.

WINTER REGULAR SEASON 2016-2017 – final regular season results as of January 1, 2017

MEXICO – the final standings for the second-half of the winter season are:

According to the playoff rules for qualification in Mexico, the bottom two teams – Yaquis de Óbregon and Charros de Jalisco – are eliminated.  The remaining six teams will play best-of-seven series beginning on January 2 with the pairings as indicated above:  Mayos de Navajoa will host Águilas de Méxicali;   Cañeros de Los Mochis will host Venados de Mazatlán; and Tomateros de Culiacán will host Naranjeros de Hermosillo.

DOMINICANA – the regular season was a close-run affair from opening day to the close of the season.  The finals standings were:

The top four teams advance to a todos-contra-todos ronda (round-robin phase), where each club will play the other three qualifiers six times (18 games per team).   The top two clubs emerging from the round-robin will play each other in a final series to determine who will advance to La Serie del Caribe 2017.

Los Cocodrilos de Matanzas led the Serie Nacional throughout the first- and second-halves, finishing the season on a 9-game winning streak.  The Crocodiles set a SN 90-game season record with 70 victories.  The semi-final pairings will commence on January 4 and have the Crocodiles hosting Granma, and defending champions Ciego de Ávila hosting Villa Clara.

The bottom five clubs in the LVBP battled to the final games to determine who would nail down the last three playoff spots.  Traditional power-houses and long-time rivals Magallanes and Caracas were left out of the January action.  For the first round of the playoffs, Lara will host Margarita, Caribes will host La Guaira, and Zulia will host Aragua in best-of-seven series.

PUERTO RICO – fellow SABR member Lewis Rubman advises that Daisuke Matsuzaka is trying to rejuvenate the gyro-ball in Puerto Rican winter league play.  Pitching for Gigantes de Carolina, Dice-K compiled a 2.70 ERA in 20 IP, with an opponents’ BA of only .197.  Perhaps a return to MLB?

The Cangrejeros and Indios were on top of the standings at 1-2 for most of the season.  Santurce will host Carolina and Mayagüez will host Caguas in semi-final action beginning on January 3.

WINTER REGULAR SEASON 2016-2017 — as of December 11, 2016

PANAMA – fellow SABR member Kit Crissey advises that his friend Bill Hockenbury passed away recently at age 92.  Hockenbury logged nine seasons in the U.S. minor leagues and played with the Carta Vieja Yankees in the Panama Winter League in the 1950s.  He pitched in la Serie del Caribe for the Yankees in 1954 and defeated Almendares 5-1, allowing just two hits.

The regular season race remains close among the Dominican clubs.  With the top four teams qualifying for the post-season, all the teams are still in the playoff hunt.

Ronnie Rodriguez leads the league with a .336 average.  Rodriguez played this past summer for the Cleveland Indians’ AAA affiliate in Columbus.

The poor showing on the field for the new Aguadilla Tiburones franchise has led to financial difficulties as well.  The club failed to make payroll earlier in November.  The situation was rectified over the next few days and management is hopeful this was a one-time occurence.

CUBA – the second phase of Serie Nacional 56 play has been suspended due to the death of Fidel Castro.  Play will resume on December 4 as the six qualifying teams play for positions in the post-season.  Current standings (which are cumulative of phase one play) are as follows:

OFF-SEASON/PRE-SEASON (Summer/early Fall) ITEMS OF NOTE

PUERTO RICO – la Liga de Béisbol Profesional Roberto Clemente (LBPRC) is expanding to five teams for the 2016-17 winter season.  A franchise from Puerto Rico’s baseball past, Tiburones de Aguadilla, has been added to the mix for the winter league.  The Sharks last competed in Puerto Rico’s top league in the 1950-51 season.

MÉXICO – la Liga Mexicana del Pacífico (LMP) continues its building program with the debut of Nuevo Estadio Yaquis in Ciudad Obregón, Sonora.  This new ballpark (opened October, 2016) joins other new or substantially rebuilt stadiums in Méxicali (to host 2009 Serie del Caribe), Hermosillo (to host 2013 Serie del Caribe) and Culiacán (2015).

To celebrate the opening of the new stadium in Cd. Obregón, the LMP is re-instituting a mid-season all-star game to be held there on Nov. 27.

VENEZUELA – undeterred by political and economic challenges, la Liga Venezolana de Béisbol Profesional (LVBP) announced that they intend to host the 2018 Serie del Caribe at Barquisimeto, home city of the Cardenales de Lara.

CUBA – sports authorities made further changes to the system of competition for Serie Nacional 56 (SN56).  In order to better align the ending of their season to the start of la Serie del Caribe (and eventually MLB spring training), and to improve the overall level of competition, the following changes were announced:

A First Phase of their schedule will be played from early August to late October.  All 16 teams in the top league will participate in this 45-game primera etapa.

A Second Phase of the schedule will commence November 1 and include only six clubs for the remainder of the season.  The top four finishers from Phase I will advance, as well as two clubs from positions 5-8 as determined by play-in games.  The six advancing clubs can be reinforced by players selected from the eliminated ten teams.  The Phase I won/loss records also carry over into the second phase.  Phase II will complete in late December.

Playoff Rounds will be held in January and will conclude in time for the SN56 champion to participate in Serie del Caribe 2017.

WINTER REGULAR SEASON 2016-17

CUBA SN56 – as mentioned above, the current SN56 season began on August 7.  Of the 16 teams participating in Phase I, the following six advanced to Phase II play, which began on November 1:

Matanzas, Ciego de Ávila, Granma, Villa Clara, Holguín, and Camagüey.  The Matanzas Crocodiles have been playing outstanding ball, and currently are 46-5 with a 12.5 game lead over second place Ciego de Ávila.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC – play began in la Liga Dominicana (LIDOM) on October 20.  Through the first 14 games, Gigantes del Cibao are in first place at 10-4.

VENEZUELA – LVBP play began on October 6. Águilas de Zulia (Maracaibo) have the early lead at 17-8.

White Sox fans in the U.S. should note that Ozzie Guillén is managing the La Guaira club this season.

MÉXICO – the LMP season began on October 11.  The LMP plays a split-season and la primera etapa has been very tight, with four clubs (Hermosillo, Méxicali, Navajoa, and Los Mochis) tied atop the standings at 13-10.

PUERTO RICO – play began for the LBPRC on October 27.  Mayagüez and Santurce are tied for the early lead at 6-2.

                Estadio Quisqueya, Santo Domingo, Republica Dominicana – site for the 2016 Serie del Caribe

La Serie del Caribe, the Caribbean World Series, returns to the Dominican capital of Santo Domingo in 2016 for the 58th edition of the torneo invernal.  The site for the onfield action will be Estadio Quisqueya, the venerable stadium in the capital built in 1955 by the government of Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo.

This venue seats approximately 14,500 and measures 335′ down the lines, 383′ in the alleys and 411′ in center field.  The stadium serves as the home field for two of the Dominican winter league’s six teams – los Leones del Escogido and los Tigres del Licey.

My travel plans are booked for Serie del Caribe 2016, which will be played February 1-7.  I will again be traveling with my Mexican amigos in a tour group organized by Travesias Mundiales in Hermosillo, Sonora.  This will be my sixth trip to the Caribbean Classic, and my second visit to Santo Domingo.  I look forward to it with much anticipation.

MEXICO WINS SERIE DEL CARIBE 2016

Day Seven — Sunday February 7, 2016

The Mexican team (Venados de Mazatlan) defeated Venezuela (Tigres de Aragua) in dramatic fashion Sunday night.  DH Jorge Vasquez hit a lead-off, walk-off homer in the bottom of the ninth to win the game 5-4.  This clinched Mexico’s fourth Serie del Caribe crown in the last six years.  Mexico ran the table, six wins and no losses, for the first time since the format of competition changed in 2013.

Here are some of my reflections on Serie del Caribe 2016:

* The system of competition worked well this year.  The two strongest teams, Mexico and Venezuela, played well in the round robin, won their semi-final games, and met in an exciting final.

*  Of the five teams, only the Cubans were clearly overmatched.  Puerto Rico played well and was probably the positive surprise of la Serie.  Although the Dominicans were swept, they were in every game and lost several in extra innings.

*  Fan support from the local Dominican hosts was less than expected.  No game even approached being a sell out.  When talking with the locals, they blamed the poor local economy and high ticket prices.

*  Although overall attendance was not up to expectations, there were large contingents of Mexican, Venezuelan, and Puerto Rican fans at the games supporting their teams.  At the final, about a third of the stadium was occupied by Mexican fans, another third by Venezuelans, and a third was empty.  Apparently, there is a large Venezuelan expatriate community in the Dominican Republic and they were certainly out in force supporting their team.  The Mexican fanaticos received a lot of positive press coverage for their attendance and support of la Serie.

Finally, I would like to thank all of my Mexican amigos for their friendship and support at la Serie.  Special thanks to mi buen amigo Juan Antonio.  Gracias por todo.

Day Six – Saturday February 6, 2016

IT WILL BE VENEZUELA AND MEXICO IN THE FINALS !

Venezuela romped over Puerto Rico 13-3 and Mexico took the nightcap over Cuba 7-2.  The final game will be Sunday at 4pm local (Atlantic time zone) time.  Fans here see this as a good result, as the clubs with the two best records in round robin play are competing against each other for the Serie del Caribe crown.

Venezuela 13 – Puerto Rico 3

Jose ‘Cafecito’ Martinez led the offense for Venezuela with four hits, including a triple and homer, and four RBI.  Marcus Walden scattered seven hits in 5.1 innings for the win.  Venezuela is looking for their first Serie del Caribe crown since 2009.  Puerto Rico exceeded expectations and had a good tournament.

Mexico 7 – Cuba 2

SS Yunieski Betancourt had three hits and four RBI to lead the Mexican offense.  Hector Daniel Rodriguez recorded his second win of la Serie, pitching six innings while allowing only one run.  Seven Cuban players had a hit apiece, but they could not put together a big inning to catch the Mexican squad.  Mexico will be looking for its fourth Serie del Caribe title in the last six years.

 

Day Five – Friday February 5, 2016

Mexico 8 – Puerto Rico 4

Mexico scored six runs in the top of the eighth to pull away from a scrappy Puerto Rican club.  At the top of the order, Pineda and Greene combined for six hits and four RBI to keep the offense rolling.  1B Cyle Hankerd, who was being given the day off, came off the bench for a key two-run double in the 8th.  Neftali Soto hit another homer for Puerto Rico.

Cuba 4 – Dominicana 2 (11inn)

Cuba shocked the home team with a dramatic extra-inning win.  Cuba thus advances to the semi-finals while the host Dominicans are eliminated from further play.

FINAL STANDINGS FROM THE ROUND ROBIN PHASE

Mexico (Venados de Mazatlan)  4-0

Venezuela (Tigres de Aragua)   3-1

Puerto Rico (Cangrejeros de Santurce)  2-2

On Saturday, Venezuela will play Puerto Rico in the first semifinal and Mexico will play Cuba in the nightcap.  The two winners will then advance to the finals on Sunday.

 

Day Four – Thursday February 4, 2016

Venezuela 3 – Cuba 1

A serious lack of offense continues to plague the defending champions.  Venezuela scored one in the second and two in the third to set up the win.  Leadoff hitter SS Juniel Querecuto, led the offense with four hits.  Cuba recorded an out on a Venezuelan runner by using the hidden ball trick at second base!

Puerto Rico 2 – Dominicana 1 (14 inn)

The cinderella team of the tournament so far, the Puerto Rican squad stunned the home crowd by tying the game in the bottom of the ninth and winning it in the 14th on a walk-off HR by Neftali Soto.  Soto had three hits and both RBI.  DR closer Raphael Soriano was tagged with a blown save.

Key game on Friday – the losses by Cuba and Dominicana set up a key match on the final day of round robin play.  The two teams will play each other in the nightcap, in what will be a loser-goes-home match.

 

Day Three – Wednesday February 3, 2016

Mexico 6 – Venezuela 4

Venezuela took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third, but Mexico scored three in the bottom of the fourth and never trailed thereafter.  Eight Mexico pitchers managed to scatter 15 Venezuelan hits to hold on for the win.  Justin Greene went 3-4 and Yuneski Betancourt drove in two runs for Mexico.  Adonis Garcia, Daniel Alvarez, and Jose Martinez all had three hits each for Venezuela.

Puerto Rico 12 – Cuba 1

The Puerto Ricans stunned Cuba with five runs in the top of the third and went on to win big.  Five Puerto Rican pitchers held the Cubans to four hits overall.  PR catcher Rene Garcia had 4 RBI and DH Kennys Vargas hit a 3-run homer.

Home Run Derby

This is a new feature added this year for Serie del Caribe.  MLB veteran Vladimir Guerrero got top billing for this event and the retired star represented the host Dominicans.  However, Venezuelan Felix Perez took the honors.  The lefty batter took advantage of a slight breeze blowing left-to-right, plus a sweet swing, to tally eight homers in the first round and two more in the final round.

Day Two – Tuesday February 2, 2016

Mexico 9 – Cuba 3

The Mexican team put up 3 runs in the bottom of the second and kept the lead for the entire game, adding tallies in the third, fourth, sixth and seventh innings.   Cuba threatened in the top of the sixth, scoring 3 runs on five hits as Mexican starter Eddie Gamboa tired, but that was all they could get.  Hitting stars for Mexico were 1B Cyle Hankerd with a homer and C Sebastian Valle with 5 RBI.  The Mexican squad is looking very good so far.

Venezuela 8 – Dominicana 7 (10 inn)

Venezuela overcame an early 0-4 deficit to win in the bottom of the tenth in a see-saw game.

After two days of play, the round robin standings are:

Puerto Rico  0-1

Opening Day games – Monday February 1, 2016

Venezuela 2 – Puerto Rico 1

Puerto Rico scored in the top of the first, and that was the only run they could tally against Venezuelan starter Freddy Garcia.  Venezuela scored two runs in the bottom of the second on a walk, a mis-played grounder on the infield, and then a triple by Cafecito Martinez.  Those two runs stood up to win the game.

Between games, the opening ceremonies featured music, dancing, and a tribute to Dominican great Juan Marichal.  The stadium officially added his name this season, so it is now Estadio Quisqueya Juan Marichal.  The great pitcher was in attendance for the festivities, and he took the ball for the opening pitch.  Complete with his trademark leg kick, he fired a strike to the plate.

Mexico 3 – Dominicana 2

The Mexican club took advantage of their speed at the top of the lineup, Dominican errors and solid pitching to take the nightcap.  Mexico scored single runs in the top of the second and third innings.  The home team tied the score in the bottom of the third when Leury Garcia hit a dramatic two-run inside-the-park home run.  Mexico pushed across the winning run in the top of the fifth on two singles and a third Dominican error.

Mexican starter Hector Daniel Rodriguez pitched five innings for the win.  Mexican outfielders Justin Greene and Chris Roberson were both 2-4 at the plate.  Fernando Rodney made an appearance in the ninth for the Dominicans to keep the game within one.  In the bottom of the ninth, the Dominicans had the tying run on third with two outs but a grounder to first ended the game in the Mexicans’ favor.

 

As of January 31, 2016

I arrived late yesterday via Miami.  The international airport in Miami is truly the gateway to Latin America.  On the flight from Austin to Miami, I sat next to an elderly lady that was traveling on to Maracaibo, Venezuela to visit her grandchildren.  Upon checking departing flights on the board in Miami, I noted seven commercial flights leaving for Cuba, among dozens of other destinations south of the border.

A beisbol riddle:  A crab fisherman walks into a cantina.  At the bar are a lion, a deer, and two tigers.  Where is the cantina?

Answer:  The cantina is in Estadio Quisqueya Juan Marichal in Santo Domingo, Republica Dominicana.  Those are the team mascots of the five clubs participating in Serie del Caribe 2016.

The field is set for the 58th edition of the Caribbean Classic.  The clubs are:

Leones del Escogido from Santo Domingo.  Los Leones will host the series in their home stadium.  Escogido’s field manager is Luis Rojas and the GM of the club is Moises Alou.  They are both the sons of MLB player and manager Felipe Rojas Alou.  This is Leones’ 16th Dominican Winter League title.

Venados de Mazatlan will represent the Mexican Pacific League.  The club from the port city in Sinaloa has captured its 9th LMP crown.

Tigres de Aragua from Maracay won its 10th league title and will represent Venezuela.  This season marked the 70th anniversary of the Venezuelan professional league, and Tigres would like to cap that off by bringing the Caribbean Series corona back to Venezuela.

Tigres de Ciego de Avila will represent the defending champion Cubans.  In just their second year back in la Serie del Caribe, following an absence of over fifty years, the Cuban squad captured the 2015 crown.  They will be keen to repeat.

Cangrejeros de Santurce prevailed in Puerto Rico for their 14th winter league crown.  It was the first time in their long history that the team won back-to-back Puerto Rican championships.

A programming note — the games will be broadcast in the U.S. en vivo on ESPN Deportes.

Dominican Republic (LiDOM)

Leones del Escogido are the 2015-16 Dominican champions and will play en casa next week at Serie del Caribe.

Leones raced to a 4-games-to-0 final series lead over home-town rivals Tigres del Licey.  Licey staved off elimination with a 7-6 victory in game #5, but Leones clinched with a decisive 8-4 victory in game #6.  Escogido thus wins the best-of-nine championship, 5 games to 1.  This is los Leones’ 16th Dominican championship since 1951.

Mexican Pacific League (LMP)

Venados de Mazatlan are the 2015-16 LMP champions!

After splitting the first two games in Mexicali, los Venados won all three games at home against Aguilas to take the series four games to one.  Game five went extra innings, with Mazatlan pushing a run across in the bottom of the 10th inning to prevail 4-3 and capture their ninth LMP crown.  Over 15,500 fanaticos enjoyed the game at Estadio Teodoro Mariscal in the port city.

Venezuela (LVBP)

Tigres de Aragua are the 2015-16 Venezuelan champions!

Navegantes opened the final series at home in Valencia against Tigres de Aragua.  Magallanes prevailed 14-3 in the first game and also won game two by the score of 5-4.  The best-of-seven series then shifted to Maracay, home base of los Tigres, for games 3-5.  In game #3, Tigres scored 3 runs in the bottom of the ninth to send the game to extra innings and then won it 5-4 in 12 innings.  Tigres also held serve at home in games #4 and #5, winning 6-2 and 6-1.

Upon returning to Valencia, Tigres clinched the championship by winning their fourth straight game, a convincing 8-2 victory over Navegantes.  This is Tigres’ tenth Venezuelan championship.

Puerto Rico (LBPRC)

Cangrejeros de Santurce are the 2015-16 Puerto Rican champions!

Indios de Mayaguez opened at home against Santurce.  Indios continued their winning ways in the post-season, taking the opener 4-0 over the Cangrejeros.  Game two saw Santurce best the Indios 5-2 back in San Juan.  Game #3 returned to Estadio Isidoro Garcia in Mayaguez (site of the 2011 Serie del Caribe).  The home club Indios won that game 1-0.

Santurce prevailed at home in game #4, 4-3 in 13 innings.  Santurce was also able to break serve, winning game #5 in Mayaguez by the score of 3-2 over los Indios.  Santurce now leads the best-of-seven series 3-2.  Game #6 will be played Friday, January 29 at Estadio Hiram Bithorn in San Juan (site of the 2015 Serie del Caribe).

Santurce pushed across two runs in the bottom of the sixth, and that’s all they needed to win 2-0 in game #6, thus successfully defending their Puerto Rican title.  This is the first time in franchise history that the Cangrejeros have won back-to-back championships and it is their 14th league title.

Cuba (Serie Nacional)

Don’t forget that the defending champion Cubans’ representative has already been determined.  Due to the differences in the Cuban league schedule, as compared to the other four league participants, the Cuban champion from the already completed 2014-15 season will represent Cuba at Serie del Caribe 2016.  Therefore, even though Serie Nacional 55 is still underway in Cuba, the SN 54 champions – Tigres de Ciego de Avila – will represent the defending Serie del Caribe champion Cubans.

Dominican Republic (LiDOM)

Tigres del Licey won twelve straight games in the Dominican todos-contra-todos (round robin) playoff semi-finals, thus punching their ticket to the league finals.  The final standings for the 18-game round robin phase was as follows:

Licey   12-6  (advances to finals)

Escogido  9-9  (advances to finals)

Toros     9-9  (eliminated in play-in game)

Estrellas  6-12  (eliminated)

Escogido and Toros thus needed to play a one-game, loser-goes-home, showdown.  That game was held in La Romana on January 18.  Escogido won that encounter 7-2, and advances to the finals.

Estadio Quisqueya in Santo Domingo will be rocking for the next week, as both Tigres del Licey and Leones del Escogido share the stadium as their home field !!  The best-of-nine final series opens on January 20.

Mexican Pacific League (LMP)

Both semi-final matches went the full seven games.

Venados de Mazatlan prevailed 2-1 in the deciding game at Ciudad Obregon and advance to the finals.

Aquilas de Mexicali won 4-3 in 16 innings at home against Navajoa.  Over 17,000 fans enjoyed the win at Estadio B-Air.

The LMP finals begin January 20, with Mexicali hosting Mazatlan in a best-of-seven series.

Venezuela (LVBP)

Both semi-final series went the full seven games.  Caribes (Anzoategui) were defeated by Navegantes (Valencia) 4 games to 3.  Tigres (Aragua) defeated Tiburones (La Guaira) 4-3 and also advance to the finals.

Navegantes have now qualified for the Venezuelan finals for the fourth consecutive year.  The opening game of the final best-of-seven series will be held in Valencia on Friday, January 22

First Round Playoff Updates – as of January 10, 2016

Mexican Pacific League (LMP)

Aguilas de Mexicali became the first club to advance to the second round of the playoffs, sweeping Charros de Jalisco 4-0 in the opening series.

Yaquis de Ciudad Obregon advanced to the second round on the strength of their 4-2 series win over Los Mochis.

Mayos de Navojoa also advanced by defeating Mazatlan 4-2 in their series.

In the LMP system of competition, a comodin (wild card team) also advances to the semi-finals.  This team is determined as the losing first-round club that had the best record.  In this year’s case, both Mazatlan and Los Mochis won two games in their series.  The wild-card club was then determined by the best “run percentage”, defined as runs-scored divided by runs-allowed.  Based on this calculation, Venados de Mazatlan will advance to the second round.

Therefore, the LMP semi-finals will feature best-of-seven series – Mazatlan at Obregon, and Navojoa at Mexicali.  The semi-finals begin Sunday, January 10.

Venezuela (LVBP)

Venezuela (LVBP)

For the 2015-16 season, Venezuela adopted a split-season format similar to that used in the Mexican Pacific League.  The final cumulative point standings, the sum of the first- and second-half records, is as follows:

With the top six teams scheduled to advance to the first round of the playoffs, the three clubs tied at 9.5 points (Caribes, Leones, and Cardenales) had to face-off to determine which two clubs would move forward.  This three-way play-in was held as a doubleheader at Estadio Universitario in Caracas on December 30.  It was an exciting day of beisbol, as Caribes won the opener over Leones 4-2 in 10 innings.  Caribes therefore advances, with Leones then playing a loser-goes-home game vs. Cardenales in the nightcap.  This game was also a thriller, as the home team Leones prevailed 6-5.

Therefore, the first round of the playoffs will feature these match-ups in best-of-seven format:  Navegantes host Caracas; Tiburones host Caribes; and Tigres host Bravos.

Mexican Pacific League (LMP)

The LMP wrapped up the second half of their season, and the six qualifiers have been determined.  The combined-point standings, reflecting points earned for both the first- and second-half-seasons, are as follows:

As a result, Culiacan and Hermosillo have been eliminated.  The three “quarter-final” best-of-seven matchups, beginning January 1, are as follows:

Jalisco at Mexicali; Los Mochis at Ciudad Obregon; and Navojoa at Mazatlan.

Puerto Rico (LBPRC)

The winter league in Puerto Rico ended its regular season with the standings at:

Indios de Mayaguez          27-15

Cangrejeros de Santurce  21-21   6 GB

Criollos de Caguas           21-21    6

Gigantes de Carolina       15-27    12        (eliminated)

The top three teams now advance to a round-robin phase beginning play on January 2.

Dominican Republic (LiDOM)

The Dominican league is the first to complete their rol regular (regular season).  The final standings at the end of the 50-game schedule is as follows:

Estrellas (San Pedro)     29-21  (Estrellas took first place due to winning season series 6-4 over Licey)

Licey (Santo Domingo)   29-21

Escogido (Santo Domingo)  25-25   4 GB

Toros (La Romana)         23-27        6 GB

The semi-finals (actually a four-team round robin series) will begin December 27 with Estrellas hosting Toros and Licey vs. Escogido at Estadio Quisqueya.

Mexican Pacific League (LMP)

The LMP franchises are on a building spree, constructing several new stadia.  Estadio Sonora opened in Hermosillo in early 2013, Estadio Bancomer has just opened in Culiacan, Sinoloa, and a new stadium is planned for Ciudad Obregon, Sonora in 2017.  The league seems happy with the 2014 shift of the Guasave franchise to Guadalajara, thus bringing another large metro area into the LMP.  The Mexican winter league plays a split-season format, with the primera vuelta completing on November 19.  First-half standings are as follows:

Cuba (Serie Nacional)

Due to the differences in the Cuban league schedule, as compared to the other four league participants, the Cuban champion from the completed 2014-15 season will represent Cuba at Serie del Caribe 2016.  Therefore, even though Serie Nacional 55 is now underway in Cuba, the SN 54 champions – Tigres de Ciego de Avila – will represent the defending Serie del Caribe champion Cubans.  (thanks to SABR member Peter Bjarkman for clarifying this)

Puerto Rico (LBPRC)

The Liga Beisbol Profesional Roberto Clemente is operating with only four teams this Winter.  Long-time stalwart franchise Leones de Ponce has suspended operations for a second consecutive season, and were joined on the inactive list by the recently-resurrected Senadores de San Juan.  Senadores dueno y presidente Lic. Hector J. Ferrer Rios is undergoing cancer treatment and the franchise will suspend operations awaiting his recovery.  (thanks to SABR member Angel Colon for this update)

The four clubs playing this season are defending champs Cangrejeros de Santurce, Indios de Mayaguez, Criollos de Caguas, and Gigantes de Carolina.  Approaching the half-way point of the season, Indios and Criollos are tied atop the standings, with Carolina 2.5 games back and Santurce 5.5 games back.

Dominican Republic (LiDOM)

All six franchises are returning for play this winter:  Leones del Escogido, Tigres del Licey, Aguilas in Santiago, Gigantes in San Francisco, Toros in La Romana, and Estrellas in San Pedro.  As of the mid-point of the season, Licey is on top of the standings with a 2 1/2 game lead over their capital rival Escogido and Estrellas.

Venezuela (LVBP)

All eight franchises return for action in the LVBP this Winter: Caribes (Anzoategui), Tigres (Aragua), Aguilas (Zulia), Navegantes de Magallanes (Valencia), Cardenales (Lara), Leones (Caracas), Tiburones (La Guaira), and Bravos (Isla de Margarita).  This winter the LVBP has adopted a split-season format similar to that traditionally used in Mexico.  Results for the primera ronda are as follows:

Tiburones  19-13  8 pts

Tigres     19-13    7 pts

Navegantes  17-15  6pts

La Serie del Caribe, the Caribbean World Series, returns to Puerto Rico in 2015.  The Series will be held in Estadio Hiram Bithorn in San Juan from February 2-8.  This stadium, which served as a temporary “home away from home” for the Montreal Expos in 2003-4, is named in honor of Hiram Gabriel Bithorn Sosa, a native of nearby Santurce and the first Puerto Rican to play in the Major Leagues.  Estadio Bithorn currently serves as the home field for both the San Juan (Senadores) and Santurce (Cangrejeros) franchises in the Puerto Rican winter league.  It is one of the larger baseball venues in Latin America, seating about 18,000.

With the Cuban Serie Nacional champions again participating, the five-team tournament will follow the same schedule of competition that was established in 2014.  That is:  the first phase – Feb. 2-6, will be a five-day, single round-robin competition.  From those results, the bottom (fifth-place) team will be eliminated and the remaining four teams will play a semi-final round on Feb. 7, with the two winners then playing for the championship on Feb. 8.  The schedule is here .

I’ll once again be traveling to la Serie and will serve as SABR’s “unofficial” reporter.  2015 will be the fifth consecutive Series that I’ve attended, and I look forward to it with much anticipation.  I’ll do my best to keep you informed of the run-up to the Series, the participating teams, the excitement in the stands, and the action on the field.

CUBA WINS SERIE DEL CARIBE 2015

Cuba 3 – Mexico 2 — Cuba pushed across single runs on multiple singles in the 1st and 2nd innings, and got a solo homer in the 8th to take the win and the series.  Mexico managed only four hits against Cuban pitching.

The is the first Serie del Caribe win for a Cuban team since 1960, their eighth overall, and comes in their second year back in the torneo invernal.

Cuban DH/OF Frederich Cepeda was the tournament MVP.

 

Some reflections upon Serie del Caribe 2015 in San Juan:

* Once again Venezuela dominated in the round-robin phase, but was knocked out in the semi-finals.

* The Puerto Ricans were disappointed in Santurce’s play, although they did pack the stadium for an emotional win over the Dominicans in the last game of the round-robin.

* Cuba is back on top of la Serie del Caribe!  The Cuban team started off slowly.  They may have been back on their heels after the usual visa problems, etc. caused their trip from Havana to their hotel in San Juan to take over 14 hours.  Then, two players defected from the squad.  However, once the Cubans gained their footing they were hard to beat in the latter stages of the tournament.  Cuban stars Despaigne, Gourriel, and Cepeda did not disappoint, hitting .333, .333, and .471 respectively.

* La Serie was well-organized and things ran smoothly at the stadium.  Unlike past series, there were two tickets per day (rather than one ticket for a double-header).  Therefore, we had to clear the stadium after the day game and re-enter for the evening game.  This made for extremely long days for those of us with tickets for all thirteen games.  Food and drink in the stadium were plentiful and tasty.  There was a reasonable amount of sports-wear for sale, although Puerto Rico team jerseys and hats were either extremely expensive or non-existent.

* Attendance was as expected, although possibly less than hoped-for with the two-ticket-per-day format.  There were two evening game sell-outs, both with Santurce playing.  Daytime attendance ranged from 1,200 for the opener (Cuba vs. Mexico) to 5,600 for the first semi-final (Mexico vs. DR); night-time attendance from 3,800 to 18,747 for the emotional Puerto Rican victory over DR in the ninth inning of their final round-robin game.  The Mexico-Cuba final drew 7,700.

* The play on the field featured the “inside” game that is popular in winter ball.  Teams played for one run at all times, bunting often and putting runners in motion.  The prevailing breeze blowing in from left field kept most balls in the park.  With the expanded 28-man rosters, most teams carried 15 pitchers and pitching changes were frequent.

* The 2016 tournament will be hosted by the Dominican Republic and tentatively the site will be Estadio Micheli in La Romana.  I think this will probably be dependent upon stadium seating being expanded.

MEXICO AND CUBA REACH THE FINALS!!

Mexico 5 – Dominicana 4 — Mexico jumped out to a 5-0 lead and held on as Gigantes had the tying run at third in the bottom of the ninth.

Cuba 8 – Venezuela 4 — Venezuela led 4-0 after four, but the Cubans stormed back with the help of three Caribes errors.

Cuba has a chance to win its first Serie del Caribe title in over 50 years!  Mexico is looking to take its fourth title in the last five years!  The action begins at 5:30pm AST in Estadio Hiram Bithorn.

One of the Cuban fanaticos had a good-natured exchange with my Mexican friends.  He told us “Tonight we eat arepas (a Venezuelan dish), and tomorrow we will have tacos.”  Funny!  Los Vegueros from Pinar del Rio made good on the first half of his statement.  Vamos a ver esta noche (we’ll see tonight).

Venezuela 4 – Mexico 2 — Venezuela swept through the round-robin phase without a loss.  A late two-run homer sealed the deal for the Caribes.

Puerto Rico 3 – Dominicana 2 — An emotional walk-off win in the bottom of the ninth in front of a packed home-field crowd helped the host Cangrejeros salvage some satisfaction after losing their first three games.

Standings as of the end of the round-robin:

Venezuela   4-0

Dominicana 2-2

Mexico        2-2

Cuba           1-3

Puerto Rico  1-3 (eliminated due to having lost head-to-head against Cuba)

Game results from Thursday, February 5:

Venezuela 6 – Cuba 2 — The Caribes scored four in the top of the 3rd and that lead held up.  The Cubans hit two HRs, but both were solo shots.  Venezuela added a solo homer.  The three round-trippers are somewhat unusual with the prevailing wind blowing in from left field and the damp tropical air.

Dominicana 3 – Mexico 2 — The Mexican team pushed across runs in the 3rd and 7th, but the Domincans scored one in the bottom of the 8th and two more in the bottom of the 9th.  Mexico was constantly in trouble and committed five errors during the defeat.

After four days of the todos-contra-todos (round robin) the standings are:  Venezuela 3-0, Dominicana 2-1, Mexico 2-1, Cuba 1-3, Puerto Rico 0-3.  The round-robin phase will finish with Friday’s games.

Game results from Wednesday, February 4:

Venezuela 6 – Dominicana 5 — All the scoring occurred in a wild first two innings that took 1:20 to play.  Once the two clubs settled down defensively, it was scoreless for the rest of the game that lasted a total of 4 hours, 2 minutes.  The two clubs used a total of 16 pitchers; both starters were gone by the second inning.  A mild upset in favor of the Venezuelans.

Cuba 3 – Puerto Rico 2 (10 innings) — A near-capacity crowd of 15,500 hoped to see the home team register a victory and avoid almost-certain elimination.  Puerto Rico put runners in scoring position in the 8th and 9th but could not push across the lead run.  Cuba won the game after a fielding error put a runner at second and a subsequent single sent home the winner in the bottom of the 10th.  The game was a hugh disappointment for the Santurce aficionados.  This was another long game due to 43-minute rain delay in the bottom of the 2nd.

Cuban major-leaguer Aroldis Chapman was in attendance.  It was the first time he’d seen his country’s team play since 2009.

It’s reported that two Cubans defected from the team.

A Puerto Rican family sitting in front of us has a son that’s a catcher in the Mets’ farm system.  His name is Tomas Nido.

The round robin standings are now:  Mexico 2-0, Venezuela 2-0, Dominicana 1-1, Cuba 1-2, Puerto Rico 0-3.

Game results from Tuesday, February 3 :

Dominicana 6 – Cuba 1 — the Dominican team looked very strong in all aspects of the game and won their first game handily against the Cubans.  Although Cuba had 12 hits, the Dominicans turned four double plays to get out of several jams.

Between games we saw former Astros player Jose Cruz at dinner.  He was very gracious and spoke to all of us.

Prior to the second game, all of the members of the Puerto Rican “Dream Team” 1995 Serie del Caribe champions threw out first pitches.  This club included Bernie Williams, Carlos Delgado, and Roberto Alomar, amongst many others.

Mexico 3 – Puerto Rico 2 —  The Mexican club took advantage of two Puerto Rican errors to push across enough runs for the victory.

As of the completion of the first four games of the todos-contra-todos (round robin), the standings are:  Mexico 2-0, Domincan 1-0, Venezuela 1-0, Puerto Rico 0-2, Cuba 0-2.

A little more about Estadio Hiram Bithorn:  The field is a turf field, with the older-style dirt cut-outs around the bases.  The outfield distances are symmetrical – 325′ down the lines, 375′ in the alleys, 404′ to straight-away center field.  There seems to be a prevailing breeze blowing in from left field, and that knocked down at least two possible home runs on Monday.

ESTAMOS LISTO  (We’re ready)  The baseball started Monday.  Here’s a brief summary of the opening day:

Mexico 2 – Cuba 1 — Mexico prevailed in a pitching duel between both clubs’ starters and bullpens.  Cuban starter Freddy Alvarez went six innings allowing only two hits and a run.  His wind-up reminded us of “El Duque” Hernandez.  Anthony Vasquez went five innings for Mexico, allowing only one run.  Mexico pushed across the tying run in the sixth, scoring on a fielder’s choice when Cuba was unable to complete a double-play.  Los Tomateros then scored their second run in the seventh, on a pinch-hit RBI single by Walter Ibarra.  That run stood up, as Mexico took the victory despite only having three hits.

Opening ceremonies – Ivan “Pudge” Rodriguez threw out the “first pitch”.  But, he did it by taking the ball, walking off the mound and going behind the plate, and then firing a “strike” to second base.  The home crowd loved it.

Venezuela 5 – Puerto Rico 2 — los Caribes de Venezuela scored three in the third and two more in the fourth to take command of the game.  The host Puerto Rico team managed only five hits.

Sunday, February 1 – Had lunch today with friends Lewis and Gail Rubman, who we met at Serie del Caribe 2011 in Mayaguez.  After lunch, took the bus to Estadio Hiram Bithorn so that Lewis could check on his press credentials.

While at the Stadium, we visited SABR member Leo Landino in the ESPN Deportes production truck.  Leo showed us some of his operation and expressed his confidence that the telecasts of la Serie would be the best yet.  Thanks, Leo, for an insightful visit.

Saturday, January 31 — Well, I’m on the ground here in San Juan.  On the drive in from the airport, we passed a parade with los Cangrejeros players and staff in open trucks going down one of the main highways in San Juan.  Coincidence?

NEWS ITEMS:

Cuba – Having been disappointed in their performance last year, the Cubans have heavily reinforced the Pinar del Rio squad.  It’s reported that 16 players on the tournament team are refuerzos (reinforcements) and 12 are from the Vegueros regular roster.

Puerto Rico – Highly-touted Cubs prospect Javier Baez, a native of Bayamon, PR, will not play in Serie del Caribe.  The middle infielder, who was playing for Santurce, has not received permission from Chicago to continue playing winter ball.

Dominicana – Top Phillies prospect Maikel Franco will play with the DR team, along with Brewers shortstop Jean Segura.

Los Arbitros – fourteen umpires have been assigned to officiate la Serie, six from the host league in Puerto Rico and two each from the other four leagues.

THE FIELD IS SET ! THE FIVE TEAMS THAT WILL COMPETE IN SERIE DEL CARIBE 2015 ARE:

Cuba – Vegueros de Pinar del Rio won last year’s Serie Nacional 53 title and will represent Cuba in this year’s torneo.  Due to the length and timing of the Cuban winter league season, the 2014-15 champions will not be crowned until later in the Spring, so last year’s champs are the Cuban representative.

Dominican Republic – Gigantes del Cibao (San Francisco de Macoris) won their first Dominican league title and the honor to represent Dominicana at la Serie del Caribe.

Mexico – Tomateros de Culiacan return to la Serie del Caribe after an 11-year absence.  Culiacan last won la Serie in 2002 and they also took the crown in 1996.

Puerto Rico – Cangrejeros de Santurce will host la Serie in their home ball park.  This storied franchise was the last Puerto Rican squad to win la Serie, in 2000.  They are seeking their sixth championship in el torneo invernal.

Venezuela – Caribes de Anzoategui led the entire way in the LVBP, winning the regular season, round-robin, and finals.  They last competed in la Serie in 2011 in Mayaguez.  Caribes are looking towards their first-ever Caribbean Series crown.

OFF-SEASON (ie, Spring & Summer 2014) DEVELOPMENTS

In May, Serie Nacional 53 wrapped up in Cuba with Pinar del Rio taking the championship.  They will represent Cuba at Serie del Caribe 2015.

There were franchise changes in the Mexican Pacific and Puerto Rican winter leagues.  In Mexico, the Guasave Algodoneros moved to the Guadalajara metro area and are competing in the 2014-15 Mexican Pacific League campaign as the Charros de Jalisco.

In Puerto Rico, there were changes involving two of that league’s iconic franchises.  The Senadores de San Juan returned to league play after an absence of several years.  They will share Estadio Hiram Bithorn in San Juan with the Santurce club.  Sadly, los Leones de Ponce, one of the league’s oldest clubs, decided to suspend operations for the season.  A disbursement draft was held to distribute their players among the other Puerto Rican clubs.  The loss of the Ponce club leaves the Puerto Rican league with five clubs for the 2014-15 season.

 

REGULAR SEASON RESULTS (concluding December 31, 2014)

CUBA – as mentioned earlier, Pinar del Rio will represent Cuba at the Caribbean Series in San Juan.  Due to the length and timing of the Cuban Serie Nacional, their 2015 champion will not be decided until Spring of ’15.  Consequently, the previous year’s champion will represent Cuba at la Serie del Caribe.

DOMINICANA – the rol regular wrapped up in the Dominican on December 21.  The final standings were:

Gigantes del Cibao (San Francisco)         28-22

The top four teams qualify for the post-season todos-contra-todos (round robin) playoffs, beginning December 27.  As you can see from the standings, both of los felinos from Santo Domingo failed to qualify, leaving los fanaticos in the capital without any post-season beisbol at venerable Estadio Quisqueya.

MEXICAN PACIFIC LEAGUE – the Mexican winter league plays a split-season format.  The standings at the end of la primera vuelta on November 21 were:

Upon adding the points earned and determining the top six teams that will qualify for the playoffs, the defending Mexican Pacific League and Serie del Caribe champion Naranjeros de Hermosillo was eliminated, along with los Mayos de Navojoa.  The remaining six clubs will enter quarter-final best-of-seven playoff matches to begin January 1.

VENEZUELA – the final standings of the rol regular are:

Caribes (Anzoategui)  39-24

Tigres (Aragua)          35-27

Aguilas (Zulia)            35-28

The top four teams advance to a round-robin phase.  The newly-reestablished Senadores squad is therefore eliminated.

 

LEAGUE PLAYOFFS – round-robin, quarterfinal and semi-final series results:

VENEZUELA – as mentioned above, at the end of the regular season there was a three-way tie for the fifth and final playoff qualifier.  The three clubs involved, Cardenales de Lara, Leones de Caracas, and Tiburones de la Guaira met in a sudden-death doubleheader at Estadio Antonio Herrera Gutierrez, home field of los Cardenales.  Per decision of the league directors, Leones and Tiburones played the first game, with the loser being eliminated and the winner advancing to the second game versus the host club.  The results were as follows:

Game 1:  Tiburones 4 – Leones 1 (Tiburones advance to game 2)

Game 2:  Tiburones 8 – Cardenales 7 (Tiburones de la Guaira advance to the five-team round robin series)

 

The five-team round robin in Venezuela opened play on Saturday, January 3.  The final standings are:

Caribes (Anzoategui)      11-5 (qualify for final series)

As of the end of play on January 18, Caribes and Navegantes de Magallanes both had 4 game leads with only three games remaining in the 16-game todos-contra-todos; thus they will face each other in the LVBP final series.

 

DOMINICANA – the final standings in the round-robin phase were:

Gigantes (San Francisco de Macoris) 10-6 — Gigantes advance to the finals

Estrellas (San Pedro de Macoris)        10-6 — Estrellas advance to the finals

Aguilas (Santiago)                                 7-9

Toros (La Romana)                              5-11

 

MEXICO – the last of three quarterfinal best-of-seven series concluded Friday night, January 9 with these results:

Charros (Jalisco) 4 – Venados (Mazatlan) 0 — Charros advance to the semi-finals

Tomateros (Culicacan) 4 – Caneros (Los Mochis) 2 — Tomateros advance to the semi-finals

Aguilas (Mexicali) 4 – Yaquis (Cd. Obregon) 3 — Yaquis and Aguilas both advance to semi-finals, Aguilas as the winner and Yaquis as el comodin (the wildcard) having the most wins among the three losing clubs.

 

The semifinal best-of-7 series began Sunday, January 11.  Here are the standings:

Charros (Jalisco) 4 – Yaquis (Cd. Obregon) 2 — Charros advance to the LMP finals

Aquilas (Mexicali) 3 – Tomateros (Culiacan) 4 — Tomateros advance to the LMP finals as the result of a 9-8, 11-inning victory at home in Culiacan on January 19 !

 

PUERTO RICO – the final standings of the 12-game round-robin phase are:

Cangrejeros (Santurce)  8-4 (advances to finals)

Indios (Mayaguez)          8-5 (advances to finals)

Gigantes (Carolina)         7-6 (tied for second but eliminated in play-in game)

Criollos (Caguas)            2-10 (eliminated)

Indios and Gigantes tied at 7-5 in the round-robin.  Indios then defeated Gigantes 1-0 in one-game play-in held in Mayaguez on January 18.

 

WINTER LEAGUE FINALS

MEXICO – the finalists are Charros de Jalisco and Tomateros de Culiacan.  The best-of-seven finals began January 21 in Guadalajara, Jalisco.

After splitting the first two games on the road in Jalisco, Culiacan swept their three home games and took the LMP Championship four games to one.  The Tomateros return to la Serie del Caribe after an absence of 11 years.

 

VENEZUELA – Caribes de Anzoategui and Navegantes de Magallanes (Valencia) qualified for the final series.  The best-of-seven final series began January 24 in Puerto la Cruz, home town of Caribes.

Caribes’ home field is named for this former major league shortstop.

Caribes won the LVBP title 4 games to 1 over Navegantes.

 

DOMINICANA – the finalists are Gigantes del Cibao (San Francisco) and Estrellas Orientales (San Pedro).

Gigantes play in a ballpark named for this former major league second-baseman, a native of San Francisco de Macoris.

After losing the first two games of the final series, Gigantes won four in a row.  Estrellas fought off elimination by winning game seven.  But the Gigantes rebounded in game eight to clinch the title at home (in Estadio Julian Javier), five games to three.  This is the Gigantes first title in the Liga Dominicana.

 

PUERTO RICO – Cangrejeros de Santurce and Indios de Mayaguez are in the finals.  The best-of-seven final series opened January 20 at Estadio Isidoro Garcia in Mayaguez, site of the 2011 Serie del Caribe.  Home games for Santurce are played at this year’s venue, Estadio Hiram Bithorn in San Juan.

Santurce won game six at Estadio Hiram Bithorn before 12,000 hometown fans, clinching the Puerto Rican title 4 games to 2.
